Dave there has been loads and loads of advice on how to cue through the white smoothly,I just can't remember what threads they are on, but the main gist of it all is to cue as if the whites not there, so it's as if you are cueing at the object ball, try playing shots from baulk line with ob down near pink area, and playing it with a bit of follow through this encourages the cue to come right through and finish at the chest, but you must stay relaxed ,still, and stay down until balls stop, do you have four contact points, grip hand, chest, chin and bridge hand? As these can help a lot in keeping the cue coming through straight. I am just regurgitating things better players have told or shown me.
Terry Davidson has written some very good stuff about this ,you could ask him, he might remember where it was posted.
