  • Ronnie's Setup - Right handed/Left handed

Just wondering what the coaches thought of this.

It looks to me as if Ronnie's grip is different when he plays left handed. When he plays right handed, he grips mainly with his second and third fingers, whereas when he plays left handed, it looks as though he grips mainly with his first and second finger.

What are the coaches thoughts? And also; what about his setup generally? Both identical or different?

The reason it got me thinking was: if Ronnie thought there was a "correct" way of doing things, then he would do exactly the same thing, irrespective of whether he was playing left or right handed.

Ronnie doesn't get his cue as level to the table when he plays left handed. this is why he gets more side on the break off shot when left handed as he is striking slightly down making the cue ball swerve more than he does with his right hand.
That's the only difference I've noticed.

I think he looks pretty awkward playing left handed, doesn't appear to look as comfortable doing it.

His left handed play was met with a frosty reception and, if I remember, needed to apologized for using it! I think as a youngster that would have inhibited him..
Yes, the setup is not the same as the right hand but he's still hitting straight from the elbow.

Pots more left handed in one frame then I do in a month right handed! I often wonder how he makes it look sooooooo easy when he does it. Even though it looks far more unatural then his right handed technique, he still pots some incredible balls lefty.

ROS pots better left handed than I do and I am left handed!

My favourite players: Walter Lindrum (AUS), Neil Robertson (AUS), Eddie Charlton (AUS), Robby Foldvari (AUS), Vinnie Calabrese (AUS), Jimmy White, Stephen Hendry, Alex Higgins, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Dominic Dale and Barry Hawkins.
              I dream of a 147 (but would be happy with a 100)

It would be interesting whether he takes a squarer stance when playing left handed than his usual boxer stance when right handed seeing as his dominant eye is his left.

His left handed technique is far worse than his right. I think his grip is more into his palm than his fingers when playing left handed and his elbow is not right over his head like when he plays right handed. He is very good left handed but he doesnt look as comfortable as some of the other professionals when they switch hands.

Yet he's had lots of centuries playing left handed.

Oh yes he is very good left handed but his cue action is different to his right handed technique. There are quite a few players about nowadays who can play with both hands and its getting more common especially with the younger players.

                        Cheers for the replies Gavin.

I see that he does things slightly differently depending on if he's cueing left or right handed, and my original question was to the coaches as to why this would be.

"if Ronnie thought there was a "correct" way of doing things, then he would do exactly the same thing, irrespective of whether he was playing left or right handed."

Would just be interested to hear why you think he'd hold the cue differently.

I think this is a pretty stupid question, i mean he is right handed normally, who just happens to be able to pot balls left handed, i can't even hold the cue in my left hand !!!!, i just don't understand how you expect him to cue perfectly the same with both hands !!!!
