distance from cue ball

hi all, can anyone here tell me the distance from white ball to the v of the thumb on the bridge hand? i am thinking of measuring my cue from the tip back and marking it lightly with pencil so i know that on general shot im not too close or far away. i've read thats its between 9inch and 12inch? whats everyones preferance?
please help

Between 9 and 12 inches is probably a standard and I think most players are inbetween these two. Depending on the type of shot though you may be longer or shorter. I think mine is 10". The pencil line is only good as a guide though. I wouldn't start thinking too much about it because it might take your focus of the shot and you will be thinking too much about your bridge length.

If your a newbie I'd say anything over 7 inches (17-18 cm) is making the shot unnecessarily hard for yourself.

To me these absurdly long bridges (25+ cm) used by some players are a complete mystery.

You have read it right. For normal shots its around 9in to 12 in. It also depends on different players and different shots.

thanks for the comments, i have read all the links i am going to practice with a shorter bridge because mine is about 12 -14 and i notice that i pull the cue back all the way for all types of shots so it has to travel iso far forward im sure it goes of line slightly and i miss the simplist shots.
But i notice when im playing well a dont pull the cue back as far so it hasnt got far to travel either.
so if i get my hand closer then i will automaticly have a shorter backswing and limit my errors.
im i making sense?
