  • The Grip...

I've been debating in my head whether i have maybe got a butt diameter that is too small for my hand, it's roughly 30mm but i do have quite big hands(quite tall as well).

Before i started changing cues frequently i believe my butt on my old powerglide was at least 32mm+, what is peoples' thoughts on this, does having big hands necessarily mean a bigger butt would be more ideal?

One last thing, i heard before about a grip type product that sits on the butt, anyone know what exactly that is or what it is called..? Thanks

The grip product i was talking about seems to be a sleeve which is heat shrunk, it was really for a bit of thickness but i don't that would feel right...http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NON-SLIP-3...90634550080%26

I'll try that out thanks, I've been working on my grip as I felt it was too loose, still not convinced on the butt diameter but won't hurt to try a few different grips out...

It's almost impossible to have the grip 'too loose' unless you're holding it with your fingertips.

I believe since I've learnt this game by myself that at times I do hold the butt with my fingertips, especially through pressure situations. The reason for experimenting is I know you should have the same consistent technique, I'd say it's odd as most people would tighten up but I think it's maybe my butt is extremely on the small size for my hand. The league is over till Sept hence working on my flaws of snooker.

HD: Nice idea, I'm sure I could add around 1mm or double that for curiosity purposes.

                southpaw:

You could experiment with some house cues that have thicker butts however the danger is with a thicker butt you will end up with a thicker shaft in the middle portion of the cue and it might be hard to make a comparison between the two when you have a completely different shaft flex in the house cue.

You could try some heat shrink which can be applied using a hair dryer so you don't need the heat shrink gun to do it. You could try electrical tape as a temporary fix just to check and see if a thicker butt is for you and then order a new cue with the same shaft flex as your present cue but with a thicker butt

Thanks Terry, i tested out Humper's idea there at lunch, had an old bicycle tube and cut 6inches of and stuck it round the butt, it felt a lot better in my grip hand, I'd say it was 1mm added but it made a hell of a difference to be honest, so ordered some of that heat shrink sleeve stuff and I'll test that out hopefully at the weekend if it comes before that...

Don't think it is the diameter of the butt. To work out how firm to grip a cue, put it on the table and then pick it up. This is how firm you should grip. Make sure the cue is tight in first couple of fingers and thumb and no gap. The last 2 fingers don't really grip the cue and should be loose. Remember if you try to change something in your game or technique you will be concentrating on this and therefore you may play worse for a while. You will improve eventually though so stick at it. :-)

Cheers Jimmy that's good advice, it's maybe in my head but the grip hasn't been my strong point for a long time now, my game has already went a bit suspect messing with this grip malarkey, I still think 1mm added to the butt and the grip you mention or upper thumb and 1st finger is what I'll drill into my cue action.

I was convinced at one point that a thicker butt would help me in my 'so called grip' issues. I went from a standard 30mm to, at one point, 31mm. Then I started to feel I (was not hitting from my elbow), with more energy going into the hand.. so, I wondered back down again to a 30.5mm and even scored heavy with a 28mm cue.
I now use a 29 with a bit of a flare taper, the eye of my hand holding the cue at around 28.5mm.
It all ends at hitting from the elbow for me, and I now know with a neutral hand-wrap around the butt I can play with any cue, as long as its got a bit of a spring

Well the heat shrink grip came earlier and I've just put it on, it does feel nicer in the grip hand but won't know till Sat how it will feel on the table...2013-07-11 15.08.36.jpg2013-07-11 15.08.03-1.jpg

I hope I'm not wasting my time experimenting with my grip size, though I probably am =) and it's just a case of not gripping properly on a consistent basis, though thanks for sharing that, as I'll keep an eye out to see if the extra mm causes me any issues regarding the pendulum movement(hitting from the elbow).
