  • Follow through - arm hitting chest.

My brother is trying to improve and I've been giving him some help.

He isn't hitting through the ball very well. His follow through is probably only about 2 inches past the cue ball, whereas mine is about 4 inches.

I've set up his stance and everything, as he is completely new to the game and hasn't really ever played before (he's 25). He looks great on the shot. Nice bridge length, holding the cue at the correct point at the back, and a nice distance from the shot.

However, he's saying that if he delivers the cue through to his chest, it's the fact that his grip hand actually hits his chest and prevents him from going any further.

With me, I think having taken a video of us both, I do drop my elbow very slightly which gives me that extra bit of follow through. It's only very slight. Maybe 1" max.

What are the common reasons preventing that extra follow through?

just check that when his tip is right up to the cue ball his grip falls vertical down from the elbow and he has at least 6 inches from the front of his grip until his chest. If his hand is too close to start with or his tip is too far from the cue ball in the address to start with then he will lose follow through. He may also be gripping the cue too tight and decelerating on the shot. I would start by looking at these.

Also if he complains that he cant have enough follow through cuz his grip hand hits the chest and the chest stops it and does not allow it to go any further, as you stated, then maybe he has a follow though space but the chest stops it... Ask him to go down on the shot by twisting/swiveling on his hip and take his hip a couple of inches to the left (is he is right handed) then see if that brings any change....

I would suggest he does less bench presses, maybe his pecs are too big!

Well, it was because he had his shoulder up too high on the shot. Having the shoulder up too high meant that there was hardly any room for his grip to go through on the shot, and also that the chest was in the way.

i think coachgavin has it spot on, i have a mate when he plays he addresses the cueball with the tip around 3 inches away, so when he follows through he loses 3 inches or so.

there are some that can address the cueball with the tip not close but you will find that their grip is behind the vertical by a few inches so in effect its the same as addressing the cueball with the tip almost touching and the arm vertical. the distace from the front of the grip to the chest has to be around 4-6 inches to get a good follow through.

He address the cue ball with the tip very close. His back arm is also perfectly straight.

in that case he must not be pushing the cue through to his chest, if there is at least 4" + from grip hand to chest at the address position and his arm is vertical, if he pushes through to the chest he must at least have a 4" follow through.

A couple of posts above I posted exactly what the problem was.

It's hard to say without seeing him, but where is his cue running? Is it too far in(poor explanation ), if he is right handed, is his right shoulder too low, I'm just trying to think of things that would restrict room. Is he twisting his hips to get himself out of the way(another slightly poor explanation ) hope you know what I mean.
