In my opinion the lineup is a complete waste of time unless you are a really accomplished player.
I get what you're saying and to an extent I agree...

You see it in the club... A beginner playing the lineup and getting frustrated with not being able to make 20/30.

The lineup is an exercise of progression.

You should begin with all the balls in a line and just potting them in any sequence... When you can clear them, move onto five reds with pink and black ... then ten reds with pink and black... then five reds and all the colours, ten reds and all the colours, then fifteen reds and all the colours...

Beginner's attempt the lineup and assume it's all about the score you achieve. It's not... It's the progression of learning to clear the balls that's important.

I practice the lineup a lot. I'm at the point now where I usually go for the maximum or use all pinks. I never think about the score, just the position and tuning my cue arm so that the balls go in the centre of the bag.

That's the point of the lineup.

Lineup is a waste of time

my highest in a line up is 90 but my highest in match play is 115 . just cant deal with picking the balls out and remembering my score. not fully focused IMO and not match practise

I done the max on a line up but it don't count for anything - still good practice - I too mix it with other routines. I try always to make a ton before moving on to something else.

I never count now though just work out it must be a ton if there is nothing or nearly nothing left.

The point is solo practice is good to keep up the standard and improve your game. 50 50 with playing better players - even better .

If you think the line up is hard you need to give up.

Thanks lads for all the sound advice.

Maybe I will do the lineup again and probably not counting is the way to go.

I am happy to be playing well again after a dour 3 month spell, a hcap tourney win over d xmas and the icing will be on the cake.

Line up is very useful as is any other drill. But first, I'd try 5 reds between pink and black. If that goes well, try the full set.

I gave up for 14 years and when I done the line up had a maximum the first day I did it, so not frustrated.
Trust me it is the best practice, gives you the basics for break building, you will notice that shots in a normal game will relate to the practice" it's all in the mind.

What was your highest break at the time?

I also think it is a bit of a waste of time and never do it myself. It is a false set up and you get away with slack positioning so not really any comparison to a proper frame.

                          Some swear by it though.

I had by that time five 147's in competitive play.

That's some pretty impressive break building.....

When you say competitive play, was that on your way trying to become a professional??

I was a pro when I gave up, the only reason I commented on this discussion is that I read certain peoples threads and they drive me mad, they go on and on about new cues etc etc, they try to find a clue instead of just getting on with it and excepting there ability and enjoying the game.
