In my opinion the lineup is a complete waste of time unless you are a really accomplished player.
You see it in the club... A beginner playing the lineup and getting frustrated with not being able to make 20/30.
The lineup is an exercise of progression.
You should begin with all the balls in a line and just potting them in any sequence... When you can clear them, move onto five reds with pink and black ... then ten reds with pink and black... then five reds and all the colours, ten reds and all the colours, then fifteen reds and all the colours...
Beginner's attempt the lineup and assume it's all about the score you achieve. It's not... It's the progression of learning to clear the balls that's important.
I practice the lineup a lot. I'm at the point now where I usually go for the maximum or use all pinks. I never think about the score, just the position and tuning my cue arm so that the balls go in the centre of the bag.
That's the point of the lineup.
