  • What to practice and what not to, before a match?

If you have an hour practice time before a match, what practice to do to warm up, and what not to do to frustrate myself before the match?
Also, if you find yourself keeping missing a certain long pot during practice before the match, would you stop it since it can frustrates you?

i practice some long straight blues just to get my arm going, i do that for 10 minutes then pot 5 in a row to finish, then i go down to blacks off the spot for 10-15 minutes then finish it by potting 5 in a row from different angles.

then i will run the colours a couple of times, and then either scatter the balls or do a line up.

usually by the time iv been through that routine one of my team mates turns up and we have a few practice frames.
i am always the first there on match night haha

What to practice and what not to, before a match?

and in regards to stopping if im missing a shot alot, no i dont, i set myself that target of 5 in a row and wont finish until iv done it.
generally i do it first or second time as 5 is pretty low but i feel comfortable once iv done it.
when i just go down for a praxtice on non match nights or during the day i will do pretty much the same routines but i add pinks to the middle pockets and blues into the middle off the spot, on these days i will up it to 15 in a row, that can get frustrating, especially when iv done 13 long blues or blacks off the spot and get a kick or just have a jabby stroke.
then its back to the start again.
but i think it is all about disapline.
if it starts going too wrong i go get a drink and chill for a few minutes or go outside for some fresh air (cigarette) then go back and try again with a clear head.

i know you only asked about match nights but i hope this helps

You could do some cuing along the baulk line to get the cue running pipe like, a few long ones, skater all the balls to pot willy nilly and finally some recovery shots..

This routine is invaluable for some but for me it dont replicate hitting a ball , when you hit an object ball there is more emphasis on the shot and youre much more like to move or cue across than you will just hitting the white . An example of this is when Terry put a video up and one of the members mentioned how much he was grimacing on the shot which was one of the causes of him moving his shoulder on the shot . Take the object ball away and i bet he would not have moved half as much if at all . . . .

I put all the reds on cushions. Then I tie all the colours up so none of them are potable.

Then whenever I've got half a chance, I refuse it and play a safety shot and try and get some more balls safe.

Basically I just try and replicate match conditions as much as I can.

                          Hi everyone

Before a match you should only do easy routines to get the arm going before you go out to play the match. At most some straight long blues to confirm good cueing but only half a dozen at most. The last thing you want is to be going into a match knowing you cant pot a ball and your cueing is all over the place. After all snooker is mostly mind games so if I knew I hardly missed for half an hour I went into my matches thinking I was buzzing which is great for the head. So remember simple stuff

                          Cheers Chris small

Maybe but I'm not convinced with the example in regards to tel because I don't recall him timing the white or cuing the ball particularly well..
Doing the baulk line and matchbox has been the bread and butter for my cue action. I think it proves something if you can accelerate along the baulk line, dead straight and no movement of the cue. That should be reflected when you come to cuing the white in practice, as long as your timing the ball nicely from the elbow.

I hardly ever played well in a match if I practice just before. I started to not hit a ball 24hrs before a comp..
How was it for you chris? What was your mantra to hit form, just at the right time?
