  • My line up vid

Finally got a vid sorted. Sorry its poor quality, its just my phone perched on top of the scoreboard.

Its a bit of a messy line up - I usually take the reds in order, go for the max or try to clear without using cushions.

I feel quite smooth on most shots but I know I move on others. I seem to get the yips sometimes at the end of the backswing and move my head to the side when coming through. My approach is a bit stop start as I have marked a 12'' line on the cue as my bridge was too close to the white so I am getting used to that at the moment.

Never had coaching, used to be a regular century maker in my 20s and would like to get back to that sort of standard but feel my technique now lets me down under pressure.

    Any feedback welcome :snooker:

Aye just pack in GG you've no chance lol, very nice to see a clearance , well done ,although I doubt it's much of a challenge for you. What kind of standard are you at right now, I'm surprised your not making centuries because that looked very controlled and easy for you.
This is how you play darts ,MVG two nines in the same match!

Cheers matey. I'm 40 now and would say I'm about 40% of how I used to play in my 20s. It's been covered in other threads, I get so much more nervous and edgy now in matches because I feel my technique lets me down.

Jeez you can't have been far off giving the pro scene a crack if that's you at forty percent, has the pressure always got to you or has it got worse as you got older, I only ask as I could play darts a bit but I couldn't handle the pressure, and had to walk away. I reckon a coach would sort you out in a couple of hours if you ever fancied that route, you know what's wrong anyway but sometimes outside eyes can see the solutions better.
It sounds a bit like a self fulfilling prophesy, your not confident in your technique so you get edgy, which affects your technique so you get edgy which affect your technique etc, etc, maybe a confidence coach(can't remember the right term for them) would be as much help as a technique coach, because let's face it you can play, I hope to one day get to forty percent of what your doing now lol.

I think I totalled that up to 115. Everything looks pretty good if you ask me. I would like to make half of that. I practice day in day out on just a red line up and struggle and I have my own snooker room right in my own home. You must have been an amazing player in your twenties. With that action the more you practice the more confident you should get. Great shooting.

JRC my wife was talking to me as I was watching that my excuse and I am sticking to it...LOL anyways looks like he has played a few games of Snooker in his days. I wish i had not hung up the cue for the golf clubs when I was 11. Had a table at home as a little guy and played on it all the time but golf took over.

Back in the day nerves would actually help me play better. It's as you get older they affect your cueing and you don't have youthful hand eye coordination to overcome any flaws.

Am thinking of coming over to see a coach when our season is finished.

Thanks j6uk. It's not a bad place, it's a RAF club with 3 tables. We used to have 2 proper snooker clubs over here but now it is just these sort of RAF or Legion social clubs.

Our association is here: http://www.guernseysnooker.com/index.php?page=1. You can see in the high break section that it is not a bad standard for a small island of 60 thousand people (I'm Glenn).

No coach over here but I think I might visit one in the summer. I just want to get my technique spot on to get more consistency. I just can't work out why on some pots - mostly when potting to the right - something happens when starting to follow through and my head moves towards the pocket. I tell myself not to do it and I'm convinced I haven't until watching back and it is still there.

I wouldnt bother being in a hurry to see a coach, there will be some quite deserved smoke blown up your jacksie here as you look very comfortable at the table. Not many do! You seem to know the geography of the table well, I would personally like to see another video of you playing a frame and building a break from open play.

If you do decide to see a coach then get a select half dozen on the phone and speak to them, see how interested they are in your game and the challenges that you feel you face. Whittle it down to two or three and then call them again for a further chat before making any booking. If they are not willing to do this and do not make you feel that they understand and can't begin to outline a session for you already then don't make the effort to come over as it may be wasted time and effort. You need a 'matched commitment' from any coach you choose to work with, a little of their time on the phone in exchange for your time, travel, and commitment to improve.

                      Thanks for sharing your video

you got a really nice final delivery, and this is what its all about..
but i also see that you could be quite inconsistent, is that right?

Very! I am the epitome of inconsistency.

Not suggesting that you are mate, if anything you may have wanted just the opposite, criticism on one or two particular points that you can work on.

Coaches love disfunction and are never happier than when they can see a little something that is not text book. This means that they can take players down avenues that are just not necessary, for example changing a cue action from something that is repeatable and gets success but has one or two little kinks (I would call it character) to something that is text book yet uncomfortable for the player or that requires over 1000 hours of frustration to embed.

Snooker is a game best enjoyed not laboured over.
