  • how to sum up perfomance

hi all ive been playing snooker for 18 months,
ive had 3 70 plus breaks and cleared the line up several times,
ive put a lot of hours in easy 2-3hrs everyday either in practice or matches,
but at the moment I feel as if im going backwards or maybe standing still,
how do I gauge my practice and match performance so at least I can feel as though im improving?

i know were your at and i found finding better players to play and setting myself harder practice routines was a good gauge.. this might mean hitting the road looking for action and more hours at the table.

Having made 3- 70 breaks in just 18 months of playing snooker.... are you kidding me. You seem to have a high potential, ability and talent... Do not worry about a thing. What J6UK says is correct. Find more routines and drills and play more players in different clubs... You are on the road to success my dear, I envy you, carry on.

true. i remember 3 years of playing to reach consistent 30 breaks, with luck only 50+... if u r still young, get coached and be the next potential champion!!!

Its all about making practice count. no good just knocking balls in for fun, try a staggered line up where the reds only clear each other when the one below it is blocked, another one to use is have the balls set up put a long red on and one abobe the black between the reds and practice potting the long red trying to get on the black and breaking the pack, if you cant do it first time you always have the extra red.

What he said really - I think you have to go out and 'hit the road' as he says - you should actually welcome get beat up off better players as you learn bits from these players then get back on the practice table and keep going back for more until you can beat them up - then move on keep looking for better and better players until you meet Ronnie and co. Try and play a variety of good players then any one particular player who might beat you all the time does not get stuck in your head.
Then eventually you reach a better standard yourself to go back and beat them.

Aimless practice on your own is no good - set targets in your routines to complete and aim to beat or complete these on your own and use routines that target the weakness's in your game that you will pick up from those defeats everyone goes through. You can always take a positive from a defeat if you understand the shot selection you got wrong or a shot you missed and then take it back to your own ground to work on it.

And important one I have recently discovered - is try not get too technical.

You need to be playing with better players and ask them.

I have a newish student who comes around for a battering and pointers and he asks me the same sort of things. He's been playing for about 6 months and he's made two breaks over 50.

He hasn't made on for a month or two but he is improving all the time. I remind him that although he may not have hit the heights, breakwise... He is taking those breaks where there is a definite 20 or 24 with a greater degree of frequency.

Don't get caught up on high break.

all great advice!! making a list of what im not good at sounds like they way to go, and making practice harder,
will try to play better players as well, I really don't mind getting beat as long as I play well,
pity im not young though im 33 only took it up as a hobby I packed in boozing and partying with so called friends and needed a change in my life and something to get me out the house, a few evenings a week, and now im hooked,
I love practicing and playing every day, feel like **** if I miss a day, the missus reckons I must be nuts slapping a few balls around,
but ive meet loads of new people, ive even started playing billiards as well with the old timers, thats has helped my snooker no end,
just love it, and the TSF is great loads of advice, but I think we are all different so I really try to see what works for me, im trying not to tinker to much I think that takes the fun out off it, any thanks a lot everyone,

Well I think my performance has dipped with age -

It now takes me all night to do what I used to do all night
