am not a coach and a poor player so take this with a pinch of salt! I've suffered I think from many errors and coaching hasn't improved things - if anything made things worse.

I think vmax is right that alignment/ sighting errors are something to really think about and be aware of for poor players as this IMHO is the reason for the majority of missed pots (not from movement or from cueing across)... coaching can't really help you with this that much, you have to figure it out yourself I think...

I know I have cued balls just fine, no side etc, and just missed them, sometimes by miles. classic example being cut back blacks, doing nothing with cue ball, just miss by embarrassing amounts with no consistency.

I've tried a few things and I think it *might* be worth trying this. just before you start your walk onto the shot picture the line and make sure that your right (cue hand) hand is on this line. It's sounds strange to say this as you'd assume your cue hand would be on this but for poor players like me it's not all the time, sometimes the body is in the way. hence alignment is never right to start with.

you may sometimes have to alter where you stand to get this cue hand on line and also possibly twist your body out of the way. if you watch Ronnie/ Hendry they do twist to the side.

it's similar in principle to sometimes you see players actually point the cue, and then walk around the cue to get down. it means your cue hand is correctly on the line of aim.

the cut back blacks is a good test as your body is more in the way of your cue hand for this and you really have to work hard to work out the line and your starting place for your body with the cue hand on the line.

it may be that this is something that helps to become aware if you're missing balls by miles and u don't feel you have cued it badly.

Whoops ! as also suggested by Terry, didn't see that 'til after my post.
I think I shall do this ASAP in order to get rid of the master eye thing for good... This will tell me the exact thing so yes this is very important...

One of the best players that ever played the game, for a good portion of his career, stood LEFT of the line of aim, cocked his head slightly to the RIGHT before walking in to check that his RIGHT arm would be ON the line of AIM, and THEN walked in KNOWING his eyes were NOT on the line aim at the standing position, but that his right hand was. And then in the process of WALKING in, he knew that his eyes would eventually fall ONTO the line aim and give him the vision needed to complete the shot. Can you guess who this was?

All tips provided here are excellent, but I STRONGLY urge you to really think hard about what does the walk in need to actually do. One thing I did was to work BACKWARDS from what is needed when DOWN, to determining what was required when standing and walking in and literally devised my own system with guidelines from tips, coaches, and pros. I ended up ultimately realizing that Davis probably had it right more than anyone but was missing the one part of the game that Murphy has recently stumbled upon.

I think the WALK in needs to be consistent, repeatable, but also FLUID and smooth. Snooker is more like DANCE, and less like ENGINEERING.

Pray tell us what Murphy has recently stumbled upon.

Without confirmation from Shaun himself (and confirmation he would be OK with it), it would be presumptuous to state publicly. You have to have been watching this game for a long time to spot it - which I most definitely do watching Shaun play.

Hendry figured out how to do this by cocking his head to the right to place it over the cue in the standing position. Look at his hold videos.

get off line and get on line, its easy to find your line in one line. the line has always been there, and good players practice there line on the baulk line.

or an even simpler solution suggested by cazmac1 on this forum before he was banned ...

draw a straight line long ways down an A4 piece of paper and then fold it like a concertina ... carefully put it on the line of aim ... then address the white using your normal pre-shot routine ... once your in the address position, you'll easily see whether your eyes agree you are on the line of aim ...

Cut to the chase mate, I too have been watching this game for a long time and the only thing I've noticed about Murphy recently is that he's lost weight, gotten used to his new cue and is in a period when he's getting the run of the balls.

There isn't a secret, all he has done is lost weight, which has a dramatic effect on his confidence add that to a cue he loves and it's a match made in heaven.

I think Shauns secret is that a ton of practise is finally coming good.

I just tried a homemade sight right and when the bottom step is revealed all I see is the line on the bottom step split into 2 lines heading away from me in a V shape . Doesn't matter how I position my head the image is the same . If I close one eye then I get a solid line , but with both eyes open it's a double line
