  • A few questions.

Hi hoping to improve my game.

Ive read on forums coach Terry davidson talks about locking/cocking wrist. but i cant understand which way, in or out?

McManus and Maguire looks like cocked inwards
Murphy and steve davis looks cocked outwards.

Does it matter which way i cock my wrist? im guessing as long as its locked either way i should cue straighter?

    second question:

lengh of my bridge from cueball. would it help accuracy to shorten this to say 10 inch from "V" to cueball for most standard shots? noticed stephen lee has a short bridge and john higgins longer

I just seem to miss simple shots and it gets me down so i just want to go back to the basics. i might be ok and it could be that i need to go to specsavers. i dont even know if im even sighted of not.

Any help will be gratefully recieved

i don't understand ether this wrist cocking stuff, just keep it neutral and natural.
i have a 9" bridge on most shots and i feel its not too close and accurate, but its just as important to have a stable and firm bridge too

Cocking the wrist is usually used to eliminate sideways movement of the wrist. So either direction will be fine.. But most importantly is you to be comfortable, cause other people don't find the cocking comfortable and still play well.. Thing is just try all out and see what works best for you... Regarding the bridge length, 9 inches is the average length used. Too short will increase accuracy but acceleration will be difficult on power shot. And a longer bridge vice versa. So be somewhere in the middle

        thanks for reply.

Im going to shorten my bridge from 12 to 9 inch, I expect this will make potting poorer for a while untill my sighting gets used to being nearer.

As regards my grip. im going to try griping with thumb and middle finger with the others just resting on butt.

Now regarding the wrist cocking. if I cock inwards I notice cue rotates (chevrons moving/twist). But if i cock wrist out cue remains still but cue tip goes offline to the left at end of follow through.

        Any thoughts

practice cueing along the baulk like, it will give you all the feedback you'll need.

A wrist 'cock' is what happens naturally if you hold the cue with the thumb pointed directly towards the floor. A simple way to see this is just hang your hand straight down beside your hip with thumb and fingers pointed straight down.. Keeping the thumb pointed to the floor and not allowing the wrist joint to move at all just form a grip with the 4 fingers so that the fingertips are touching the back of the palm.

You should see the wrist is naturally cocked OUTWARDS and there's no need to accent that by turning the wrist more outward as it's the most natural and comfortable position for the wrist. Now all you have to do when you grip the cue and deliver it is to ensure the angle of the wrist remains constant because if it moves at all the butt of the cue will go off the line of aim.

Cocking the wrist inwards is not really a good thing to do as it's too easy for the wrist joint to move.

But no matter what you do the wrist joint should not bend more or less during the backswing and delivery. Easiest way to ensure that is to keep the thumb pointed straight down during the cue action
