Do not micro adjust while down on your shot, pick your line, walk into position and address the cue ball, while down on the shot if you think you are about to miss stand back up take a step back and start the process again. If you start to micro adjust you could be opening a can of worms on your cue action. And that could lead to more problems that would be harder to iron out in the future.

i read somewhere Steve Davis saying the feathering is just to get you ready and comfortable for the shot, i'm sure you've seen some feather once or twice others more and some don't at all. its all about what is comfortable for you
the looking at the cueball is to check that you are actually hitting it where you want and when you look at the OB all you are doing is giving your brain the information about the angle of the pot. so next time you have a similar shot you will learn how to line it up. so its important to keep the eyes locked on the contact point at the moment of strike.
surely you have got down sometimes on a shot and it felt totally wrong, this is because your brain knows the correct line of the shot and you are not on it, you should get up in this instance because if you try to adjust you will miss the shot or even if you didn't adjust movement will be introduced because your brain will take over and try to correct the alignment by steering your arm onto the correct line.
you could try this as an experiment. get down incorrectly where when you are down you can tell that it feels wrong. and try and convince yourself its right and play the shot.
see what you get, i'm certain you'll miss more than you pot.

He clearly is swinging on every shot, he then freezes for the moment of strike wheather you see it or not:-)
