  • Do you get coached? If so why?

Been thinking about getting some coaching and started thinking what are people's reasons for getting coached? Are you a casual player that just wants to get better? Do you play for a team and want/need to get better? Maybe you have a different reason? Personally I'd like to play for a team some time soon and be able to make decent breaks 30+ when coming to the table and hopefully getting some coaching will help me achieve both these targets.

    So what are your reasons?

Exact same as you .... Joined a team . My reason for getting coaching was that I wanted to make sure my technique was ok rather than spend time practicing with a poor technique and end up with bad habits that would take forever to change

Kinda like building a house . You wouldn't build a house on bad foundations

I a little biased but I think most players would benefit from good coaching once in awhile. For the beginner it would be to learn good basics. For the more accomplished player I've found every player I've ever coached has tinkered around with his technique and made adjustments and not all of them are good, so ironing out those gliches can help improve him.

For a pro, most of whom do seer a coach from time to time it's more in the head and also building confidence. Ronnie has likely gone to every coach out there and I know Ding was being coached by Nic Barrow when he won the 4 titles on the trot this season and it was likely more of the mental aspect that Nic was coaching him on.

Although there are self taught good players out there I expect even they could benefit from some coaching just if it's only to confirm what they are doing is right.

A good example was this weekend where I was talking to a casual player at the tournament to watch and it never dawned on him he had to keep his wrist joint still otherwise the butt of the cue will always go off line. He got that one for free though.

I love my snooker and was fortunate to meet a good player who coached me on my techniques. He changed my game totally for the better. My highest break was 55 when I met him, it's now 67, not a massive difference, but the 30s - 40s are much more regular. Instead of one 50plus break, I've had 20 or more, and half a dozen 60plus breaks.
I only play with friends, not even in a team but would recommend it for anyone who plays. Infact I would have more coaching now, anyone know of any good ones in the West Yorkshire region?

i got coaching because i kept breaking down in the balls, i couldn't really play the game the way i saw it.. ive had four coaches and i'd suggest you do some research, there's many charlatans out there with badges promoting themselves and waiting to fleece the gullible

yeah. ive seen Ding on Nic Barrows website saying that he's had help from Nic. Nic must have helped him as he had had a good season.

pro players will get coaching to improve just like everyone else. It may be technically or mentally. I remember that early in selby's career he had a massive distance from Bridge hand to cue ball. He shortened it and immediately started climbing the rankings. If he hadn't changed he wouldn't be world champion now. On the mental side look at how much better OSullivan is now that his head is better. He is much harder to beat.

His ex-manager who might be his present manager, I'm not certain. I can't remember the name but I have a feeling it was either Indian or Pakistani. I do remember reading the story on how far from the cueball he cued up and how his manager changing that had him jump big-time in the rankings.

Just click on it under my signature and you'll get there. Not sure where there are any testimonials from Ding but he did provide one for Nic's new training ball.
