I saw on the Facebook a message from Chris Henry. according to Chris Henry (The run of the balls is Caused by the striker of the CB!).!!!!!! So When you go from blue ball in to the pack. you should always have luck that the pack gos open ( Or a few balls ) and you can continue the break. according to Chris H, this has nothing to do with luck !!!!. What is your opinion??

Run of the ball and the example of going into the pack off the blue are two different things entirely, or at least how I interpret run of the ball.
For me run of the ball is getting nice little nudges or when the cueball is running free and comes of a few balls and lands perfectly on your next red or colour. Or when you play a safety shot, hit it badly, it cannons into another ball and ends up tight on the baulk cushion or worse snookered behind a ball.
However when going into the pack of reds looking to split them open I don't see that as run of the ball because you are in control of the shot. If you hit it right then the reds will open up and if you manage to hold the white like O'Sullivan or Hendry used to do then you are very likely to have at least 3 or 4 reds to go at. However if you hit the shot bad and hit the edge of a ball and lose the white or the reds don't open up, then that isn't bad luck, you've just hit the shot bad.
Also you need to look at the shape of the pack and see where the reds are likely to go on contact, you can pretty much predict fairly accurately where they will go but there is always a small percentage of luck involved, be it good or bad.

To me run of the balls is getting away with a bad shot , leaving nothing when you should or getting a lucky snooker, that type of thing. As for going into the pack for me it's total luck if I leave anything on. For a pro, well they can pick what ball to strike and will have better judgement how the pack will react, so I suppose a lot of the luck is taken out of the shot for them, still not easy though. This is how you play darts ,MVG two nines in the same match!

There is luck in snooker, you get kicks, bad bounces, odd bits of cloth that roll off, etc, but for me getting "the run" is when you play a shot badly and it still works out well. Like if you miss a ball but snooker the opponent, misjudge a cannon but still land in position etc.
You should never need the run to win, but it helps to be lucky and avoid kicks etc as they can ruin good chances, especially at high levels.- The Mad Technician.

Run of the balls has its role in our game. You cant do well without lady luck being on your side at times. Yes I can understand that one has to study the pack and analyse and hit the exact point on a red to get the anticipated and thought out opening but even then pace reduces control and one can not always be sure.
I have noticed in my game that run of the balls is very much always there. But I have also noticed something crazy... for me the run of the balls only and only happen if I am playing well and if I am not playing well the balls wont run for me Crazy but true. Unlike other sports in which when you are playing bad and suddenly something lucky happens for you and it changes everything... in snooker its opposite if you are playing well only then the run of the balls happen for you.
conclusion: lady luck is always there.. either with you or with your opponent.. but she does play her part."I am still endeavouring to meet someone funnier than my life" - Q. M. Sidd

going into the pack you do have to get some luck one cannot be certain how the balls will split no matter who you are pro or amateur.
even hitting the desired ball at the desired pace will have a different reaction each time. one cannot be 100% down to the mm accurate all the time.
you can setup the same shot over and over and you'll find the balls split different, so landing on a shot after going into the pack you need the balls to run for you too.

Scientifically speaking he is surely right. It is all down to how the cue ball has been hit.

This is true of a human player, but surely if a machine was set up with very very small tolerances, to play the identical shot 5 times, same angle, same ball positions, same pace, the outcome should be almost identical...
the balls get dirtier each time you re-rack...etc
obviously with a machine there will be similar ( but not identical) and anyways we are not machines so that's not going to happen

You only have to look at the break off shot to realise that the balls never break the same with a direct contact so to work out a cannon into the pack with geometric precision isn't really on at all. You can give yourself a better chance by hitting the cannon more precisely but the outcome is in the lap of the gods and is nothing to with playing well or not.
The run of the balls happens when you get what you are playing for when playing well, that includes cannons into the pack where hopefully the cue ball will end up on a straightforward red with a positional option.
Ask Stephen Maguire about the run of the balls he gets when playing well, I'm sure he can come up with some fruity language to explain why he doesn't get as much as some despite being a great striker of the ball.
