  • Slow start to cue delivery question.

I was watching the Australian Open Qualification and I notice that Martin Gould starts his delivery very slow and then speeds up. You can see it here at around the 54 mins mark.

What are the benefits? Any thoughts?

what he does it works, so well that the match changed completely to another match, now thats the definitive cue action

      LOL.

There is a very short section showing Martin at the 54 min mark.

marti is a fine cuist and if anyone wants to try to emulate this type of action then they'll need to cut down the hours put in on tsf, and we know that ain't gonna happen anytime soon for tsf junkies

Lol. I've already got the glasses so that might help.

If you start slow this will prevent any body movement and will encourage smooth cueing. All the pros do it just that others are slightly quicker so most people don't notice that. Watch this to get the idea.

Slow start to cue delivery question.

yeah. The best cueists start their delivery slowly to reach Max speed as the tip strikes the cue ball. Also if you start the delivery too fast then you will have a lot of body movement and the cue speed will be decelerating as you strike the cue ball
coaching is not just for the pros

Thanks Gavin. It's a very hard thing to do and get ingrained.

i like to hit from the elbow and slowly (squeeze the last 2-3 fingers close in timing with the acceleration process) and complete the shot to a full stop. move onto the next shot and repeat.
practice on the baulk line and keeping the cue bullet like along the line

I like this - How would you describe your grip at the rear pause?

It's a pity you can't put a vid up. It's hard to visualise what you are saying. I'm not sure what hitting from the elbow means.

i don't have a grip. i hold my cue with the eye of the hand cue lying on my fingers, back of the hand open more or less..

I'd guess the only thing involved in the cue movement back and forward is from the elbow down to the fingers.
Anything above the elbow stays still. maybe . .

So index finger and thumb supporting and guiding the cue in a ring around the butt with the remaining fingers off of the butt?

I have the hand open with all fingers pointing down angled to the rear with the thumb doing the same. The same way you may hold a 1" thick book by the spine to carry it.
