The grip I use is very similar to yours except on a long backswing where I bring the ferrule back to the 'V' (about 10" or so) I find my back 3 fingers have been sort of 'pushed' out of the way by the butt, however they still remain in contact with the butt. My baby fingertip is just touching, the 3rd finger is at about the first joint and 2nd finger at the pad and the forefinger is really the only hold on the cue at the back of the backswing. I believe as I deliver the cue I'm tightening the back of the hand too soon and too much so I end up 'clutching' the cue.

Right now I'm working hard on developing a distinct rear pause since to use my own argument ALL the top players (except Allen and Ebdon maybe) have a distinct rear pause so there has to be something there. As I've never had a rear pause I'm finding changing my timing like that is hard work, not for the potting so much but for the cueball control. When I asked Davis about this on his blog he said it would probably take 3-6 months to get it natural (there might be a lesson there for Les Edwards).

I find I tend to rush the shot and I've had to actually lengthen the rear pause which Nic Barrow said is probably the best way to get it. Start out over-emphasizing the pause and hopefully it will come back to a normal 1 second or so after some time.

your kinda saying all the right things tel, so maybe you'll be okay in finding your own solutions to your problems and start cueing the way you use to..
i like to extend my back pause at times from say anywhere between 2-60 seconds and this can really help with focusing on the shot, position, pace and concentration

      • Wow 60 seconds - could have a brew and a fag on your back swing.

this statement probably reads differently to all the Canadians and Americans out there

                • Another gifted left hander Jim :snooker:

For how long you have been playing, looks pretty good to me. All the basics in place for improvement with tons of practice. The only thing I did notice was that on the first pot you missed, your cueing was a slightly higher angle then the times you did make the pot. Maybe sometimes your stance width is inconsistent so you don't get right down.

                  • I have been playing two years this month GG, I am all over the shop just now there is something drastically wrong somewhere , you could very well be right about my stance, as I don't really take much notice of it, I just concentrate on getting my head online, thanks, I will mark my feet next time I'm in and walk in and out a few times and see if it's inconsistent.

Looks good to me. You're keeping your head nice and still and you have the dell drive. Nothing wrong that I can spot mate.

                      • plenty there to work with. the positives are- looks like straight cueing and good natural power behind the shot. the negatives from what i can make out would be you could drop straight down to the shot cleaner with nothing moving, wrap yourself around your cue as you drop like your swooping your coat around your girl on a cold day. and secondly whenever you pot a ball, always play position
not a good quality vid but good to watch

                        • Thanks Cyber, if I have anyone's drive it's just dumb luck as that's just my natural cueing ,J6, I think I spotted why my timings out, all these shots I tried to hold the middle of the table but the white kept running away, this is why I know something is badly wrong with my timing, but I think I have gone back to cocking my wrist forward, so when I pull the cue back I kind of pull against my own wrist, this means I am having to pull my arm back further to get the same cue draw back as my wrist is cocked forward, it also means it closes a wee bit early, so can pull my cue offline a little bit,I had sorted this ages ago, ( Chris sorted it on my first visit)by making sure my wrist was in a neutral position, could this be the reason?
I really like the metaphor or wrapping myself around the cue, another one of my faults is being a little bit late with my cue sweep.
It's horrible seeing yourself cue lol.
I have just noticed what you mean, I'm half feathering on the way down, good spot, I will really work on that, I didn't even notice it myself.

I checked your profile twice. It says that your highest break is 37? If true, then you must be the most technically sound player with a high break as low as that.
Not saying that your cueing is perfect, but for someone who is not knocking high breaks, this is just brilliant.
Maybe your problem is in position play.

                            • Truth is Ace man when I put that high break in it was a lie, I hadn't had a break in double figures, but was too ashamed to put seven or eight as a high break lol, it's now a genuine 54.
