tip depth :s

hi all,

first post and a newbie to snooker .

probably a silly question but really curious about the depth of my cue tip, i have shaped my tip to resemble a dome but it looks really high (from the ferrule to the tip of the tip) is there a specific depth?.

i only ask because you see the pro`s on telly and there tips are tiny in comparison to mine.

my general thoughts are if i go to short will i increase the chances of hitting the cueball with my ferrule?

sorry for asking a probable stupid question but its really doing my head in and i cant find any answers on google.

down to personal preference usually.
I like a thick tip, i.e. don't rub down that much when fitting from new; others like a sliver where it barely covers the ferrule.
I feel that the thickness allows for more cue ball control when playing to the outer extremes of the cue ball, than when you have only a little bit of tip between ferrule and ball.
that is my thinking and preference
Also, I don't have a very curved tip, I have the centre part relatively flat still for those plain ball long shots.
Others, have heavily curved (like you describe).
The only thing I would say, is not to have the tip curvature greater than that of the cue ball

If you have a really thin tip, I believe it could do damage to cue ball and also your ferrule if you are using side. I also use a thicker tip then what you see on tv. I haven't found a good way to get a thin tip that plays well. I believe the pros have there tips sanded down a lot first before being applied.

a new tip is 100%. So I fitted on my cue then a little trim and sanding the shape, now it becomes relatively 90% thickness left. So I play and re-shaping every time I feel the need to do so. Of course, the tip will eventually getting thinner and thinner but once it reaches the 40% mark I know for sure it is about time to change. Lower to 30%, I can't play properly anymore... the feel is not there probably the tip at 30% left is harder than it supposed to be. At 25% I will have more miscue when playing with sides and all my shots are more dead stun because I couldn't get the proper spin.

So, I fitted my new tip then mark a limit approximate 40% line on it and change it whenever it reaches 40% mark. Dome shape guided by 10 cents
