Textbooks can teach you a lot, but experience and understanding is that extra thing that a top player will have over that kind of coach, of course that's all things being equal and they are both as good as getting their points across. At the end of the day though it's up to the pupil, if they put the work in the coaching will help, if they don't all the coaching in the world won't.
    Absolutely. Agree with everything here.

Yep. This is exactly the point as well. We're not talking about your regular club player here that happens to have made a ton. We're talking about a player that's got that extra class.

            • Yes had a week with him at palmers green in 1980 and he also came down to us for 5 days,he really knew his stuff on technique.he was more of a billiard player,we had a game for an hour one day and he knocked in a 174.he wanted me to do my coaching course and in hindsight i wish i did although i did coach a lot of local players that went on to win county and area trophies.the trouble is we are on the wings of the world down here at lands end.getting back to the playing part i think you definitly have to have some natural ability and hunger to improve.a good coach can only look at players individualy as one size does not fit all,in our county league we had a 6ft 8ins player and a 4ft 11ins player and they were not text book by any means but were very good players.i think a lot of it is hard work and trial and error and finding what works best for you which might not work for others, after the game the king and the pawns go back into the same box.if you're down this way give us a shout.j6uk knows his stuff.md

Alan Bell was regarded as a decent coach , but don't believe that he was a top player .

Same as the golf coach , David Leadbetter . Great coach but not a top golfer .
Still trying to pot as many balls as i can !

as for alan he was/is a very nice player, did wonders for jimmy and was very good with me and my game. bell had all the moves and stopped me from hitting the ball too hard

                        • Meet him once when he was coaching a mate of mine.........might need him to sort out my game . Got to play a league match in a couple of weeks and not played for 3 months !!!!!

                          • Not according to Wikipedia......had little success as a golfer . Is what they say .

What i meant by top .....was a multiple winner of events .
Still trying to pot as many balls as i can !

now why would a multiple winner of events wish to teach? golf teachers teach you how to hit the ball if you wish to learn how to win look in the mirror

                              • But the thread was saying that you need to be a top player to teach ......i was using David Leadbetter as an example that this is not the case . Obviously a far better golfer than me and probably a far better snooker player as well
