  • Beginners practice

    Hi guys,

I'm wondering if you could give me some tips on practicing? I'm pretty new, used to play as a youngster but never had the money to practice regularly. once a week at most.

However, now I'm older I have the time and money to practice more. How many hours do use practice? I still don't want to be training 12 hours a week as that would be £60 a week! haha

Also what kind of things would you be practicing as a beginner? just basic potting I imagine being the most important haha. Do use just play games or do you set up specific practice shots?

    Thanks
    Craig K

There are loads of good resources available.

Practice as much as you can!

Don't just hit the balls about. Set targets and work hard.

A mix of solo practice and matches is ideal.
My favourite players: Walter Lindrum (AUS), Neil Robertson (AUS), Eddie Charlton (AUS), Robby Foldvari (AUS), Vinnie Calabrese (AUS), Jimmy White, Stephen Hendry, Alex Higgins, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Dominic Dale and Barry Hawkins.
    I dream of a 147 (but would be happy with a 100)

First off. You need to find a cheaper place to play. I'm paying £2 a hour in my local miners wellfare club.

In terms of practice. I've been using this routine for a while. It's very easy to set up and it maximises your potting time.

Place a red 15 reds in a straight line evenly spaced between blue and black spot. Pot away.

The great thing about this routine is that you don't have to keep replacing the colours.

I think it depends on what you're struggling with in play, if it's potting angles practice that, cushion shots etc...

Lots of mindless practice does you no good if you ain't got the right technique -

Work on that - watch a player who is technically good like Steve Davis or someone similar to your natural style - copy his stance bridge shape on the shot - every detail - practice your cue action - and off you go.

Or see a coach spend a few quid to get the basics nailed on first - save you a lot of pain in the long run. Enjoy

I would agree that getting the basics nailed down first
should be something to consider and you can check out
the cost of a snooker coach and make a decision on that.
Which ever way you decide I wish you the best.

IMO it is best to start with a few coaching lessons.

They will nail your grip , stance and Cue action straight away and put it right from the get go so bad habits do not kick in. Then it is up to you to practice practice practice and never steer away from the Pro advice you have paid for.

You need to learn to crawl before you walk and it is no use trying to nail full table length screw backs/hitting with massive side etc etc when you have not got the basics right nor can pot an easy Black off it's spot with regularity.
If it is called " Common sense " why is it so rare???

I only know that when I started playing at 14 the pool hall guy would let me practice for free, he got me to run the colours without hitting a rail, count the amount of blacks of the spot without missing and trying to make the white scratch after every shot. Good Luck with the practice
I try hard, play hard and dont always succeed, at first.!!!!:snooker:

Another one is trying to make the black with a half ball pot and scratching in side then corner until you can control to scratch in any pocket, I dont scratch often. Cheers
