  • Cue Action / Stroke

Hey guys..so Ive been playing snooker for about a year now after switching over from American pool (been playing over 2 years). On a good day I can make some decent breaks, 50-80....but I just feel like something is holding me back from playing to my full potential. Ive linked a video to one of my half century breaks, could you guys please watch it and critique my technique? Is my cue action / stroke faulty? Please advise on anything you think I should change or do differently to improve. Thank you

I think your potting shows you have a good eye for the ball but your shot selection is rank awful - improve your shot selection and your positional play and you will gain a lot

I think you probably find the game easy and as such you have developed lazy habits with your positional selections from being fast Eddie on the pool scene - you seem too fast around the table getting down side on rather than getting behind the shot assessing it properly and stepping in but you sight quick and time it well. Not a bad - but I think to improve you need more of a challenge against players that will punish your mistakes and you need to find players that you can learn from and perhaps some more focused patterned targets for positional practice.

Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated! I agree completely...my positional play isn't the best and you nailed it...Ive always relied on my potting to compensate for my position. So in a nutshell you think I should just do more drills and work on position to improve? My position is usually a little better then shown in the video but It totally makes sense that faulty position would end a break pretty regularly (cant pot em all) Thanks!

Exactly - Ronnie O' Sullivan is not the best player in the world just for being a great potter - he is the best because his shot selection and positional play is the best and his understanding of that is what makes the game easier for him.

Others might come on and say stuff - technical this and that - I will say best advice for someone like you is to ignore it for now -
You got the hard bit nailed on - work on the shot selection and positional aspects for the biggest improvements in your game I would say - patience and discipline - it will come Mr natural. Good luck.

Who needs to play position when you pot like that..... No just kidding. Listen to Byrom some great advice. I see you are from Toronto. Where do you do your practicing? Looks like Master Q?

BTW,, if you live in Canada ,, you might want to contact Terry (related to further development of your game). I do'nt see any tension in your cue action. imo, with a little help from a good coach, you're gonna be a good snooker player !!! Enjoy ur game !!!

You pot ok as the guys said but your positional play is miles out. You are deep screwing when you need to stun or stuning when you need follow through. Learn to control the white a bit better and you will do ok man.

Why would he take his eyes off the OB at the last moment of delivery? His eyes should be fixed on the OB until the ball hits the pocket.

Positional play. you had a red you could have stunned across the face for pink in the middle but hit it to soft and left a harder black.....give yourself more time to assess the table, look at what shot you have on, where you can put the cue ball from that ball on and try keep your rhythm as you seem to fly around the table, quite like myself

Thanks for the feed back, definitely right! I really need to slow down a little and assess the table more...Its a really bad habit of mine

In addition to what Byrom said, you do have one nasty habit.

You leave the chalk on the table. Not only it is annoying, but you will not want to pick it up every time. Who wants to frequently walk to the other side of the table? You will just get more and more sloppy.
Learn to put it in your pocket and try to chalk on every shot, no matter how easy. This will improve your pre shot routine and also make you feel more like a real snooker player.
