For starters, it came with one of Mike's prototype tips on which I tried for a day or two before ripping it off and then putting one on myself...

I don't buy in to the blackspin thing, but if I'm wrong... it would explain a lot. I have learnt how the white throws on shots with side and with that cue I found myself struggling to put simple balls with side. I was getting less spin on the white.

But... on long pots... Boom... I was like Robbo with it.

It was certainly the best looking cue and his extensions are super ****ing cool

Would you say that the Trevor White came closest to what you learned with and you felt comfortable with it straight away whereas the MW blackspin ferrule actually does what it's meant to do and produce less throw therefore you couldn't judge the deflection of the cue ball when playing with side and didn't give yourself, or didn't want to, the time to learn how to play with it.

If so in your experience would a blackspin or other low deflection cue be OK to learn with but not to switch to.

I think most of us on here have tried many cues and what may suit one may not suit another. I still don't think you can say there's a top cue IMHO, best finish maybe but best cue no as I think it's very hard to split Parris, White, Coutts, Cook, Stamford, Woodridge, even my favourite GBL

I ordered all the cues on the same day with identical specs to try and find the best service and ultimately cue.

I think the thread is called cue contest if you want to have a look

Throw is completely separate to deflection BTW. More precise language is needed to avoid confusion.

cue ball deflection and cue throw are one and the same

I believe I have had better cues from Mike Wooldridge, Trevor White, Dave Coutts and even Andy Travis despite his lower prices. Even some of the high end Thai cues seem to be made better as I have a Maximus Prime here where the workmanship is top of the line. JP is a very savvy marketeer who even has a lot of the pros believing his cues are the best ones around and that just isn't true these days. Mind you, I'm not saying they're bad but just not the absolute best out there.

I just sold my last JP cue into Singapore and I had to modify it to get it acceptable.

I agree completely, My JP is a classic made in 1987 from aged ash wood. I really only look for the older stuff as recommended by a buddy (cue maker)

Try some line up practise where you don't allow yourself to disturb any balls in the line with the cue ball, learn those little soft screw and stun shots that hold the cue ball more precisely. Get to know your cue and how it performs in your hand and your strength of shot should improve.
Don't hold back when delivering the cue or you run the risk of choking (deceleration of the cue) on the stroke. learn how high or low to strike the cue ball to get the result you need.

The most important thing of all when break building is strength of shot.
Very solid advice, and yea ive been doing the line up drill for the past 2 months and am definitely seeing improvement in my break building (this video is pretty old) will post a recent one soon for more critique, cheers

Well, this is new to me. Throw is the cause of deflection. So, basically they are the same (as golferson already mentioned). A bit off the topic,, but would you like to explain this, please !!!!

Throw is the effect the cueball has on the object ball whereas deflection is the effect spin has on a cueball. At least to my knowledge. When they say compensate for deflection, you are adjusting your aim knowing that spin will cause the cueball to swerve slightly offline and then cause the object ball to throw slightly offline, hence the many variables involved when aiming.

Enjoyed that video as you remind me of myself at that age, I could pot anything but shot selection and positional play was awful(no offence) I then discovered the joys of E like Leo and the whole of the 90's were a blur but so so good and then my dad became head of the drug squad for the North East of England and I found my snooker cue again.
You have way more talent than I had and I'm looking forward to seeing your next vid Kutgw and have a good Xmas

It's hard to pot balls with a Chimpanzee tea party going on in your head

if you're cueing straight !!! the spin has no effect on CB to get him slightly offline! (Deflection). That's why throw is important. The less throw, the less deflection ,,,,,, So basically, they are the same. anyway,, I'm sure we'll get some opinions on this one ( OR NOT !!! ). Bed time !!,, good night.
