its as Tedsbill said you have to plan everything before you get down otherwise you are not giving your brain clear instructions what you want it to do. this will then create doubt in your mind when down on the shot and you are likely to make changes while down on the shot.
and this is what can cause you to miss the pot or get bad position

Someone asked ages ago about the Nic Barrow video using discs as positional guides, I couldn't find it but by chance have just stumbled upon it, since it's the same idea that's being discussed I thought I would post it up .

Not necessary to make a circle - that makes you lazy - be more precise and have a little fun with the guy you play with - each chuck a 10 pound note on table where you want to finish and try and land on it during a session - want to get serious add up the amount of times you land on it and play the other guy for it - either your position soon improves or you get skint.
Hint - master the stun - make some money.

i get what you are saying with the line and that is true, however i position the hoop where if i landed in it i will be in the correct position i want to be in.
i also sometimes use it just as a practice routine to see if i can position the cueball where i want it. it helps focus the mind and gives me more discipline when i practice, because sometimes i can just end up messing around after a while and start bashing things.
