why do you need to be qualified to learn someone something at snooker?

There are some great players I learnt off none of them charged me a penny - ok maybe I lost the odd pint along the way.

of course anyone can learn from anyone, even from just watching a good player play one can learn, all i'm getting at if you are going to get a coach to help you and you are going to pay for it, i would rather get someone who either has a good track record or the necessary qualifications to deliver coaching

For me a good coach MUST have a proven track record. They don't need pieces of paper to say they're a good coach. Wouldn't be surprised if you can buy a coaching certificate on eBay for a few quid.

Agree some of these certificates are not worth the ink on them. However there are certain ones that are suppose to be of higher standard.
But yet again a certificate doesn't prove ability, it proves you can learn and follow instructions. This is why I said its a good idea to do the research to find out more about the coach.

I am self taught and I will remain that way. I just feel that for somebody that's determined to learn will do so. So to let a coach take over would interfere with your own development. I think that coaches(only the best) should just coach professionals who are just looking for that edge or need assistance in identifying faults/ problems that may have crept into their game. If this was made the case, I wonder how many registered coaches would actually get any customers???

My personal experience with coaches were very negative so when I see things like that book title it does make me chuckle, although a fool and his money are easily parted so you will get a few desperate wannabes eager to find out the secrets to making a 100 break

Just a little bit off track, but I think it's worth saying that ten of us could all go to the same coach and you would get a fair disparity of views, that doesn't make them a good or bad coach, just we are all different and like to be taught in a variety of ways, I couldn't for example go to Nic Barrow, he looks a great coach and I like his videos but he's too long winded in his approach for me, I like someone to kick me up the bum and say, NO that's wrong do it again, but others would like the complete opposite.
This is how you play darts ,MVG two nines in the same match!

I think some snooker coaches are like driving instructors they will just tell you a little at at time just to make as much money as they can from you.

No disrespect to Nic Barrow as I'm sure he's a great coach but for me he would do my nut in something chronic with his gadgets and technical jargon.

Tony, just wanted to say that i agree that Del is a great coach but there are others out there who are just as good. For example i had 2 hours with Ronnie O Sullivans coach for just thirty quid. i actually have him forty i was so impressed :0)

Reading this thread just shows why coaches vary so much when players like to be taught in so many different ways. Personally i think if you want to improve quickly you need coaching in any sport. Even if it's someone to push you on and keep your eyes on your target. I never had coaching as a youngster but i was able to in table tennis and if id had that coaching in snooker i would have been a very good player with the hours i spent practicing and playing.

If you do'nt have the necessary talent and skills and u re unable to learn ,, even the best coach in the world can't help you. Coach/God/or a good player can only tell you what you should do or what your errors are. The rest is up to you.
Not everyone can be a good teacher or truck driver.
                              Same goes for snooker.

you can be coached all day but if your not picking balls out for a better player week in and out then its gonna be hard to now where your really at, and get motivated
