Let's try together - rest play first

on the Barrow DVDs he says to get your stance and body alignment when using the rest; to practice the rest with a cue but no cue ball. he says the cue ball doesn't allow the player to find their body placement unhindered by what they need to do with the cue ball.
once the player has a practiced body then introduce the cue ball.
    Up the TSF! :snooker:

Playing whole frames at a time with the rest can and does work, and is fine for pro's who have hours and hours of practice time, but for the average player not really practical, one way to play more rest shots and force yourself to improve them is make sure you use it on every shot that makes you stretch, mini butts one of the worst inventions ever for good rest play !

These are probably better examples. You can see Ronnie and Selby hold the cue quite differently. In Ronnie's case the butt is poking out the back of his hand, where as with Selby the butt is in his fingers. Ronnie uses the finger-sliding method that Nic Barrow teaches, and Mark tends to use wrist hinge to keep the cue on line.

I just wonder which is more common, or more commonly taught?

Backswing and pause: very important when using the rest.

As for the grip, well it's up to the individual, a friend of mine has all four fingers over the butt of the cue when using the rest, his rest action is a reverse of his normal grip and he's an excellent rest player. I tried it and couldn't get it to work at all.

most would line the shot with their opposite leg. i like to swoop in to the shot with just a few feathers. murphy is the best rest player ever imo, so you wont go wrong in watching his approach.
i would do a lineup with it and if your making 50s then your doing well. as for straight cueing with it get on the baulk line

My rest play was never bad, but it improved further when I gave up trying to play left handed. Never gave it dedicated practise.
For some reason, my rear pause started working using the rest first (!).
If you consider that I am well below ton player, my rest play is unusually reliable.
Hate stretching and mini butt though.

I had a go at this when I went to practice today.

I tried when I first arrived at the club and did 7/10. Then after I'd been playing for an hour and got my eye in a bit I tried again. This time I did 10/10.

That's good, i think you are quite a resonable rest player, Tedisbill!

I shall set a potting objective on weekend, let me try out first and report here.

I had a go too - not such a good rest player here did 5 -10 first time and 6 -10 second and third times good idea for a thread

I was trying to get on green each time is that the idea?

its a good attitude to position onto green after the yellow. But for standardising, let's all play with dead centre first.
