  • Firstly if you are struggling to clear the colours once in twenty attempts you are not ready to move on to something else IMO , better to get this at a minimum of one in three preferably two in three something like that, it should be something you expect to do, not hope to do. If you move on I feel you will get swamped with things to do and not master any of them. Just my thoughts.
As for where to play the green from, go to your table place the White ball on it with your hand ,exactly where you would like it to be to play the green to make it easy to get on the brown(pot the green as many times as you want getting on the brown untill you are happy you are comfortable with it and are getting nicely on the brown) look at where the cue ball starting position is, now play for that spot off the yellow, job done.
This is how you play darts ,MVG two nines in the same match!

Yes I agree with you. I need to throw a bunch of reds and play yellows for shape on green until I have the shot mastered even if it takes 300 of them and do the same on green and brown. I think at least another week of colours. Sorry Ted but I think Itsnoteasy is right. Funny how it comes and goes the only problem I have as it never stays very long. The other morning I cleared the colours three times in about 10 minutes and today it was just a joke. I probably cleared them 5 times in 4 hours worth of practicing.

      • Les, consistency is my big issue too. I played for a couple of hours today to try and make a double clearance vid, but only managed to get to the second blue. However on a good day I've been able to run the colors 4-5 times in a row without missing. I'm trying hard to figure out what it is that I'm doing or not doing that causes the inconsistency...

        • I just watched most of the videos les and the only time you finish right on the green was when you started with potting the yellow into the green pocket and then the clearance was easy and textbook.

All the others the cue ball is in the same starting position and you leave yourself a mid range or rest shot on the green. It says to me you are not learning or trying different hits on the white. You are getting too much stun - try middle of the white or a tad above. I know about the elbow but using the rest with the white only 12" away from the green is better than what you keep leaving.

              • See, I personally would disagree about moving on and doing something else. Doing something else will keep the mind focused and stop you getting bored. You can't just keep hammering the same exercise day after day and expect to keep the same level of focus.

At the end of the day, getting good at hitting snooker shots is the goal. Once you're confident and can consistently hit shots well, you'll be a better snooker player.

You could not practice clearing the colours for a year, but practice other routines and exercises, get incredibly good at those, and then I'll guarantee you'll be better at clearing the colours.

Getting good at hitting snooker shots is the goal surely?

Okay then we move on. You started the thread and I appreciate your help along with everyone else's. I will be waiting for the next challenge tomorrow but also will continue to build on my colour clearance. When I had my 5x10 I use to work on Yellow, Green Brown with loads of reds and could clear them easily but that all stopped when I got my first 6x12. I could not make a ball on that table and took the wind out of my sails and hence why I have a very tentative approach. Tight pockets at 3-1/8" with falls an 1" to far back. The Snooker Prison as Cliff called it.

Fair point Ted, to be fair I didn't think folk were going out and just doing this for hours on end lol, just that this was a goal to learn to clear the colours properly.

Okay Ted what is my next challenge? I talked to TD at the tournament yesterday and he said the same thing as another post. Get the cue ball out to a short half ball stun on the green or close to dead straight and use the rest. I will be working on a position this afternoon that makes the green much easier. By the way TD is into the quarter finals of a big event in Toronto this afternoon. I did not play as I had to attend my grandsons first birthday. I drove an hour n half to help brush, block and iron tables and get some photos for our website. Next weekend is our first Tournament under the new club that TD and I started. www.ontariosnooker.club same venue with eight new Shender Tables.

                          • Hello All,

Long time no post for me...Sorry!

I do this routine (colours off the spots) after each and every practice session, I tell my self I am not able to leave until its done....thankfully I usually achieve it within my first 3 attempts.

IMO it really comes in handy when most matches at my level come down to the colours, and strangely enough this is where most times I seem to have the edge. Even my colleagues have noticed!

                            Great exercise!

                              • WEEK TWO: Pot 4 reds with either pink or black.

Your mission this week, is to clear 4 reds which are positioned between the pink and black. You must take either pink or black after each red, as you would in a real frame. Try and keep the cue ball under close control to make this exercise easier.

I have attached a picture showing the starting positions. You may start with the cue ball wherever you like.

                                Good luck everybody!
