• Length of bridge

There are so many conflicting opinions as to the bridge length on standard shots (eg) Joe Davis 12 inches, John Parrot in his coaching D.V.D. 6 - 8 inches. Dell Hill 6-7 inches. wonder what members consider the optimum bridge length, a lower ranking Pro at my club reckons 10 inches is right (6 - 8 inches appears rather short unless you are among the balls but who am I to question Dell Hill ! I would be interested to get members input as to what bridge length they consider best and why ???.

    10" bridge for me

tried a short bridge but felt too cramped, if that makes sense.

It will vary a bit. For close-in shots I use somewhere around 10" or shorter if the balls are close together but for those longer hand-on-the-table shots I use 12-13" ,OSTLY

Official World Snooker coaching manual says 23 - 33 cms or 9 - 13 inches, however your height, and length of cue action amongst other things will determine your personal ideal bridge length. In reality as Terry says the shot often dictates how close to this you can get, ie. if your between balls or near a cushion, trial and error the only way to settle on which length you feel most comfortable with.

                  Length of bridge

i think you might find some coaches are giving figures from tips of fingers to cue ball and some from the cross over from thumb and first finger. From what i gather from Del Hill he has given 10-12 inches from cue ball to the thumb of the bridge hand.

                    Length of bridge

for instance if you take the distance as always measured from the thumb of the hedge hand then with a 6 inch bridge a person with big hands would be touching the cue ball with their finger tips!

When I watch the pros they always seem to have a much longer bridge than me, I use ten inches from my thumb, theirs looks like twelve or more to me.

Do people with long bridges generally use cues with a forward balance?
