  • problems with screwing the CB

So I'm having trouble screwing the CB back, at best all I can do is screw it back maybe a couple of inches, no matter how hard I play it I just can't get the spin on the ball.
Is there anything I can try to help deal with this problem because it's starting to get on my nerves.

Without seeing you in action it would be difficult for anyone to advise properly as it could be a number of things. Maybe stick a clip up to show

You don't play it hard for a start, cue low on the white and follow through

I understand the concept of screwing the ball back and I have previously watched the video you posted but when I try to emulate it on the table it just doesn't happen

I will try to get a video of me playing it for people to see where I might be going wrong

            See if this helps

Imagine the white ball is not there - aim thro the white below centre on the object ball and at 6 0 clock on the object ball try and imagine your tip is hitting the object ball at 6 oclock - might help push thro the white like its an egg you must crack don't grip too much - it is timing not power you need.

Might help to raise the butt of your cue slightly try this out let me know how you get on and if you rip the cloth - Terry Davidson told you to do it this way not me.

It's one of my favourite things to do when coaching. A player says he can't get backspin and within a few minutes he can screw it back three feet. The look on their face is priceless.

It's not about hitting the white hard.

As other have said. Make sure you have chalk on the tip, hit low and push through the white. Once you learn to push through the white, screw back is almost effortless.

Here's a vid that will help.

I agree, and it's always they are not striking the bottom of the cueball (I guess because they've watched WC Fields rip the cloth in an old movie or something)

Has anyone actually ever seen someone ripping the cloth on a screw shot? Its seems to be one of those things where people will know of someone who supposedly seen it but nobody seems to have seen it first hand. It would have to be pretty worn and very loose for the tip to punch through it surely? I know a guy in his 80's who's been playing snooker and billiards since he was no age and he's never seen it.

Use the weight of the cue rather than physical strength, your arm acts as a pendulum using momentum and the weight of the cue in conjunction. Also try having a very long stroke, when I do deep screws I have the cue almost all the way back to the point where its almost out of my bridge hand and then I follow through completely. Bit harder to cue straight this way but if you have the cue slightly rubbing your chest it can help to cue straighter.

Only ever once - on a table that had got recovered about a week earlier :nightmare: proper L shaped rip to. Never seen anything like that before or since. He must've had a hell of a dodgy tip or brass showing...

The guy was mortified then petrified when he realised what he'd done

I've done it using a stupid swerve/masse type shot striking down on the cue ball. I was mortified.

I've never seen a cloth even damaged ..... Did Peter Ebdon not do it once in a tournament ?

think of a very lovely gagging for it model

from behind, not too hard, and make sure you follow through all the way!
