  • Cue advice please...

    Hi everybody,

My mother in law and father in law are visiting UK these days. Will be coming back in mid April. They have been to my aunt in Manchester and to their son in Reading and now to another cousin in Leeds. You know what my father in law told me. He said he is going to visit Sheffield and take a few pictures at the Crucible for me how nice of him.

They know about my snooker passion and hence my mother in law told her daughter to tell me they wanted to buy me a cue as a gift How could I say no to that hehe their daughter, who happens to be my wife, hates em for that but well to me they are the best in laws yeah.

Anyway, let me cut the chase: What cue to get in a 200 pound budget. They haven't told me the budget but I won't strain them or anything. 200 is pretty much ok. But I would need a cue, mini but and the cue case (full set).

If you ask me, my limited knowledge says to get either a good Peradon or a good Cue Craft or Craftsman. There are a few models in Peradon that I really like and my current cue is Peradon as well. Although I lengthened my cue to 60 inches as I am tall and that supports my cue action, I can get a new cue that is say 58 1/2 or 59 inches. I am sure unto 59 inches should be in stock ?

But good suggestions from you all our there are awaited for me to decide. I also go for aesthetics so the butt design would also matter. My current cue is Peradon Sandringham and I was eyeing Peradon Eden... But please do help and suggest.

    Looking forward.

if they are in Leeds, maybe have a look at http://www.craftsmancues.com could give you a good place to start and they sell Peradon cues.

Edit: sorry they only sell peradon pool cues, but they have a decent selection of other brands of snooker cues.

Same here - can't recommend Craftsman Cues highly enough. Fantastic shop with hundreds of cues to try on their table, and very helpful too.

It could be dangerous for Sidd's relatives to walk into Craftsman with not a clue as to what Sidd would like
Sidd, I think you may have to call the shop, have a chat what specs you like, ash/maple, ebony/rosewood, any slicing you like/dislike, and then the shop could put asside what they have and then your relatives can have a look when they get there, you may then get something you can play with

Or is TSF members can find something for you and arrange delivery to one of the relativs they are visiting; this is what this forum is for; helping a fellow-member in need!

what a nice gesture from your relatives, I wish....
        Up the TSF! :snooker:

I agree, it can be rather dangerous to walk into a store without really knowing what you are looking for. Hence why i suggested he checks out their website, for an idea of the sort of cues they stock. Plus a call from Pakistan to the UK might be rather expensive.

Another idea might be to provide his relatives with his specs and the other requirements and then they could pass that on to craftsman / or he could e-mail them direct.

Or as you say a forum member could possibly help out.

Good idea. I could write down my specs and an image of what i like and have it emailed. Perhaps if some forum member could help, it would be a blessing.

So Craftsman cue it is then ? Are they better than Peradon ? Any other company etc ? I need to first decide the company / brand and then the rest shall follow.

It's hard to enough to find a snooker cue yourself Sidd never mind somebody get one for you, ask them if they can purchase a gift voucher for you and then one day when you get a chance come and buy one yourself is my advice.

Gl with whatever you do though

Craftsman sell other brand cues and also custom make their own brand cues, check out their website and you'll see what i mean. The only other actual shop i've dealt with myself is greenbaize (www.greenbaize.com). Anything else cue sports related, i've bought direct from adr147. I've had cracking service from all 3 and would happily recommend them all to anyone.

If you are planning a trip over here in the near future GeordieDS's idea of a gift voucher is a cracking one. you could then try out the cues and potentially find one to your liking.

Hope you manage to get something sorted.

I do not have any plans of visiting soon. Although I could easily get a Master Cue here in Pakistan but I want to buy an English cue. I have written to craftsman cues but they haven't replied yet, lets see. Yes it is a gamble given that I won't be able to feel the cue until it is bought and brought down to me but then in this situation I have to somehow trust my luck. I asked a friend to buy me a Riley once and it was a nice thing I got used to it, then it got stolen from my club. Then this Peradon was with a player I tried it out and bought it from him.

If you ask me, Peradon is a decent thing but they sell standard 58 inches length and I need 59 inches. Perhaps craftsman cues have a 59 inches cue with them. If the guys at the shop get back to me I shall tell them my requirements and they can give the one I like best to my father in law. I went to their site but they show case only a few models for the website and not the whole gallery, they say so themselves on their Facebook page.

Isn't anyone selling something on this forum? Maybe if someone is selling something I could arrange a pick up and payment through my fathering law there?

                    Cheers,
                    Sidd

Sidd, PM Welsh Pool on here and ask him what O'min he can get you and what size. For £200, he will be able to get you something smashing. English cues are fine, but Thai cues are really good and represent the best value for money at the moment.

Are you sure about it? If that is true, I can easily get a master cue from Pakistan. But which ones are better in craftsmanship- Thai or English?

According to folk on here, the standard of craftsmanship you get in a cue from Thailand is going to cost you many more times if the cue is made in the UK. They're all (UK and Thai makers) using kiln dried timber except John Parris, so it really doesn't matter who you choose. Master Cue are great cues. You're not getting a custom cue, so it doesn't matter. Other good manufacturers are O'min, Phoenix, anything from Thailand basically. The O'min cues that do not say made in Thailand are made in China and they're cheaper but very good for the money. Cue Craft aren't going to make a cue better than Master Cue for the same money, not possible, wages are higher here.

ADR, back me up on this bud.

If you can try a Mastercue, then go that route. Being able to try the cue is very important, your family aren't going to play with it even if they buy it afterall.

How are things in Pakistan, I hope it is safe for you.

What on Earth gives you the impression that Parris does not use kilned timber.???

Whatever it is, it's totally incorrect.

The person is close to John and told me. Do you use kiln timber? Can you get hold of old wood now, naturally dried?
