  • The Oma Miesta Snooker Challenge

Hey guys thought id post a little drill challenge you guys might enjoy.

Line up 4 to 8 reds between the black and pink spots, the blue on its spot and the 3 baulk colours on their spots. Position the cue ball about a half ball cut shot on the blue and try potting the blue going in between brown and green 2 rails for position on any of the reds and pot the reds one by one repeating the shot on the blue every time. A lot harder than it sounds... for the more intermediate players, try potting the reds in order. Everyone else can pot any red. The hardest part in this drill is missing the baulk colours and stunning the cue with just enough spin to come around two rails while controlling pace.

Heres a short video example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsdkLWTLGdU

Post a video response, Good Luck!

for sure that one shot is a good one to have down.. but just looking at that layout you have there reminds me of a very nice workout, 10 reds between black and blue and using only the baulk colors to clear the reds. that really sorts the men from the boys and should keep you busy

Hi Oma that is great routine but way out of my league. If you play to your potential in our next tournament you should have no problem being in the top four. I hope I dont draw you. I will have to keep you on the Baulk cushion....

Rubbish Les, you would stand a good chance against me. I lack experience and it shows when I play in tournies, completely different atmosphere for me over there. Much easier to play well in the comfort of your own home and table, but thanks

Yea I know. I have been there for two years getting beat three straight. I am getting tournament tough now even though I cannot put them like you. The more you play in our tourneys the tougher you get. Next week is a direct entry which the Corner Bank is running. I have no chance but great experience then our tourney is the following weekend.

They cant pot what you don't leave

I got a routine that I bet Les could compete on an equal footing with everyone now - because his potting and break building ain't up to it yet so he needs this side of the game more.

Lots of folk on here learning potting routines - you also need a bit of nouse about the house.
Learn how to play the shot to nothing - master the figure of eight safety - weigh up the other guys game - if he misses to the left leave him tempters to the left side. Use patience to get in too - cant blast em all in every time so mix it up - rather than attack and get picked off from a great safety player - see it as a challenge like potting - give it them back - cut off the angles - if you have to play a safety take your time - walk around and see where is best to place the white to make it the most difficult if you had to play the shot next - can you get the white there?

Set up three reds at the bottom of the table and the yellow green brown and blue on the spots now randomly place 20 dollars on the table behind the baulk line now from ball in hand play off the three reds and give yourself three chances to land on the 20 dollars before you move it to a new area see it as a challenge to master - now this routine ain't as easy as you might think but master it give twice as much respect to a safety shot as a pot and I guarantee you will win more games.

Snooker matchplay ain't all about the potting its about the patience too - Don't get me wrong - nice to buzz and play your A game potting everything in your path but you also got to understand your own limitations and improve your B game - switch it on until the A game pops up again and I think there is no better feeling than feeling more in control of things at the table even on a bad day -

If you get both things in your locker then a real player you will be

Great Post Byrom, because I have had so much problem running balls I have always worked on my safety game. I always figured if I could win control of the table with great safety play eventually I would start to win when my potting got better. Still need a lot of work with my potting but at least now I feel if I get them in trouble I can win. Exactly what happened at our last tournament when I won a match. I try to learn as much as I can when I am watching a great tactical match online. Selby is one of the best as he proved against Ronnie last year.

OM, I'll give this drill a try tomorrow, if I can get out of house painting for a few hours.

haha honestly its only difficult at first, once you develop the muscle memory the shot is essentially the same every time. It gets a lot easier once you get a good feel for the pace and stroke. Keep at it and good luck!
