  • Cue Length calculated- new cue ordered- new season, renewed ambitions

    Hello Everyone,
This is going to be a very very long post, so have patience and bear with me please

I am really excited as I write this today. It took me a long time in understanding things which are otherwise simple, but I liked the experience so no regrets whatsoever. I am perhaps one of those who would do better in the commentary box rather than at the table, if you see what I mean LOL

First things first. I finally did some measurements on my cue and found out the following:

My distance between grip and bridge V is 48 inches. G-B=48
I like to grip about three quarters of an inch off the butt end so its roughly 1 inch B-G=1
In order to have a good sighting- one needs around 9-12 inches between V and tip- when I settled for a long pot I measured that I feel comfortable with about 11 inches. V-T=11

    Hence cue size is GB+BG+VT i.e. 48+1+11= 60

If I am to use a 58 I will have to compensate two inches from V to tip and make it 9 inches there and that is very much doable however one needs to do a lot of solo practice and improve cueing so that stance remains consistent. However, I will have to bend my bridge arm for that or else without awareness take my grip arm forward of vertical. This is exactly what I have been doing in the past and hence have been having a premature elbow drop and shoulder movement.

On my current cue 57.5 I used to have 48 as per arms length and around 4 inches were covered at the butt by my hand even if I held the cue from the very end. So technically I was left with about 5.5 from V to tip and that is where the problem was. Now in order to have more from V to tip I could either bend my bridge arm, which I sometimes did but naturally on a mental level my brain was compensating this by bringing my grip arm forward of vertical and hence all my problems.

I might sound like a fool right now but you guys don't know how happy I am on getting my main flaw identified and resolved this gives me confidence and a very good feeling for the times ahead.

So I have dispatched my Britannia yesterday and have ordered a brand new cue with following specs that I now know are MINE it took me so many years to come to this conclusion:

    Master Exclusive Ex-1 Custom
Hand spliced by Master cue Thailand- premium shaft, ebony butt with four splices of American Cocobolo wood with light green veneers.

    Length: 60 inches
    Weight: 18.5 ounces
    Tip: 9.5mm
    Butt: 29.5mm

I cannot wait to get my hands on this cue and start with it. My only worry is that I have mostly played with English cues since the start. Riley and then Peradon and then Britannia. I understand none of them were bespoke things and no one can guarantee quality however I liked them all. My Britannia was a beauty and it played so so very well in my hands. It was a superb piece of wood.

This is going to be my first thai cue so I am a little scared of the quality of timber and how it is going to play. I don't know if its a North American shaft of a local Thai ash wood. But lets see..

Last but not the least, I cannot thank Vmax enough for enabling me to understand about the length in a scientific manner.

I also need to thank Terry again here on the account that he talked to me in detail and told me about the importance of shorter back swing on low power shots. I have started that and it really helps and that I did only by NOT watching Ronnie anymore

Well anyway, this is it for me. New season in mind with some renewed ambitions. Let us hope for the best.
I shall yet again try to play my best, so lets see... fingers crossed inasmuch as the Master cue is concerned.

    Cheers,
    Sidd.

    Nice one sidd.

Did you specify your balance on that cue?

Ok Sidd, but what do your in laws think of you selling off their nice present to you
Oh and don't get overly excited and expect miracles with your new cue, the length will be right but its other characteristics you will have to take time to get to know.

No I did not. Its a 16 inches 3/4 jointed cue and I have seen and checked other master cues and they seem quite ok with the weight balance point. As for me I do not have a real presence in this regard as long as there is an ebony butt. I am sure the balance point will be as low as I like, near the butt end.

Oh Goodness. Wow can you believe that, I totally forgot about that in my excitement. Now that you have reminded me hmmmm I shall have to think about explaining to them how I have in fact upgraded their gift and not sold it off

Yes indeed, I am all set and ready to take that time. In fact I have changed cues, at least 5 times before and can understand its going to be a cue and not a magic wand so yes I will first have to test it in solo practice, hope I get the time as well as table for that and try to know the cue on a personal level- see how she feels in my hands and what are her moods, how she reacts and all that

I have always given at least three weeks for this process.

I am sure I will get used to it. It is a Master Thai cue no doubt but it is from their better hand made range at least and expensive than their basic hand made Pro Butt series. So lets see... fingers crossed.

When is tomorrow by the way? I mean in how many hours? The guy confirmed shipment and said I shall receive my cue tomorrow at 10 in my office. I have serious doubts over being able to work tomorrow

          Cheers
