  • Odyssey of a Snooker-freak- a Tribute to VmaxforSteve and TD

    Hello Everyone,

I am posting after some time and during my absence I have been playing snooker quite regularly. I m now totally one with my cue and satisfied with my decision. Why am I calling it an odyssey is because I wandered long yet the journey was eventful I am again back to my regular 25-35 breaks and I know 50ies are not far away and then further progress. To you 25-35 may feel like childish yet in a format that I play (5-6 players) it is something big. I can't have the choice of playing singles but I can't stop playing too. So I am a happy doodle since past few weeks.

Here I would like to thank all of you who have been assisting me in my understanding of the game however two people deserve a special mention.

Terry Davidson for all his time and effort in enabling me to develop a slight wrist cock that now lets me play without the grip twist and also for telling me about the pre-shot routine. Both of these are now cemented in my technique and I do that subconsciously.

VmaxforSteve for his brilliant advice on three things in particular and for that the Sidd that snookers shall remain always indebted heavily to him.

    1. Understanding my nature and personality i.e. an Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder guy and how he should take up snooker. Though it required a lot of patience on his part in getting me round the corner but he did well and today I feel relaxed on and off the table. The anxiety still jumps in while missing but I see myself today as a better and reformed player who tried to control the anxiety and regain focus rather than cursing his technique.

    2. Before coming to this forum when I knew nothing about technique I would look at the BOB and play yet after getting a lot in my head and not being able to find enough time for solo I would test things on the match table and hence be in a bad shape, however, once the importance of BOB was highlighted again I can now try to relax and shrug off anxiety and do my BOB and hence be able to cue well.

    3. The cue length is sorted out again. I feel so comfortable with the 60 inches now that I can't tell you. I hold the cue an inch off the butt end and with my stance I have a good 9-11 inches from V to tip. So I don't need to fret over elbow drop and shoulder movement and with this I feel relax on all kinds of shots and am hence playing better again.

Yes I play bad frames but then regain focus and be better in the following frames and this gives me the comfort and confidence that I require.

I have also started doing doing solo every chance I get. I will soon very soon upload a video of the new me doing solo.

    I am a happy doodle

    Happy snookering everyone !

Congratulations Sidd and stick with it although I have to agree with everyone else and say these games with 5-6 players are likely killing your game but I understand the problem since it seems to be the only game you can get. It's hard to imagine how a snooker club anywhere can be that busy that there are no spare tables.

I haven't seen that in years, in fact over 30 years but then again maybe there are not enough clubs in Pakistan or at least not enough tables for the business. Maybe a business opportunity for some enterprising young men.

Keep it up Sidd, glad to have been of help, and I must also stress that I find it amazing that you learned to play snooker to 50 plus break ability in 5 or 6 handed frames. Now there must be a certain time of the day when your club isn't so busy, find out when and get down there as often as you can for regular solo practise.

Thanks for the support everyone. Yes I am happy that at last I am back to my usual self and playing ok. The best thing is that I am now mostly able to control my pot miss anxiety and don't blame it on technique and go haywire- if I miss I smile and I move on and take the next shot with serious dedication and that helps a lot.

Yes Terry and Dean, it is a problem here. There are other clubs of course but they are a bit far away and this club of mine suits me best and besides I have made good friends and snooker mates here and they won't let me move away We gather up daily and enjoy this lovely game. Actually its the timing thing- This club only has 5 tables and can you believe people start pouring in since 3 in the afternoon and then till like 12 am its the same and then betting players come in and play from 12am to like 4am I don't like this format myself but for the time being that is what I get to play once in the club and now I have got a hang of it too Will try to get time for singles if ever possible.

Steve, yes indeed I am enjoying myself. The only time the club is a bit silent is the morning time like from 11am to 3pm and the problem is that I am busy with office and work at that time. However, on weekends I will try to find time to go early and get solo practice for 1-2 hours so lets see.

I went in today at 3:30 and came back at 7. Played about 5 frames only in the 6 player format. But guess what I cleared the colours once i.e. 27 and then near the end developed a nice little break of 38 stunned a half ball black went in to the cluster but got stuck on the bottom red no worries I am so happy these days.

I think I am on this position and my usual self after about 5 years- since the time I came to this forum I have started enjoying my game again. And yes I went in early today and had a chance of a single frame, just one frame although there wasn't a big break but I managed to get 20 and 25 and 22 in three consecutive shots hahaha the score was 67 while my opponent was still wiping his cue Such a great feeling being on top of your game !

I will surely get some solo time soon and post a video here.

          Cheers,
          Sidd.

Thanks again Steve. Well yes I did manage to get a 67 and a few 50ies and I believe it is all due to the passion I have for this game. I just love this game so much even though it has given me agony but that my all part of the learning process so I had to be patient and keep on trying and today as I write this, I am so confident that I am there now !!!
