  • Your favourite routines

Just thought I would start a thread to post favourite practice routines. Routines you will always do before moving on to more difficult ones.

I will always do these routines to start with.

1, pot 10 straight blues in the middle with top spin trying to stop as close to the pocket with the cue ball as possible.

2, same routine as number 1 but with screw back.

3, place all the balls in a line from black to brown ball in any order and pot them in any pocket in any order. I might do this 3-5 times depending on how I feel I'm cueing.

These are three easy routines that get me cueing nicely for the harder routines.

Are you saying I won't be doing many routines because my cue is broken? Or are you saying you won't be because of your deformed Paris?

I'm surprised no one has put their routines on this thread. So many so called experts on the Les Edwards thread giving him advice on how to practice.

A routine I like doing is the christmas tree:

(Click on pic for larger version) The best I've had is 40, but I think I can do better. I guess a lot of the people on here could clear up. A way to make it harder is to block the path of the pink ball to the corner pockets by widening the bottom reds.

That's a really good routine and one I will do when next at the club. I have never tried it so will be fun. I always stick to certain routines but need to change it up.
Might even put a video up.

            Thanks for posting it

do the two reds either side of the pink go past the reds side of the black into the corners. ..guessing they do!

i like reds in a line with the pink to cushion, just reds no pink and the blue on its spot and take the reds to get the right side of the blue to pot and get back to the reds nicely. good routine.

Yes, in the version in the picture they do. I usually take one of the top reds into the blue bag, then one of the reds by the pink into a corner pocket.

There is also a version where the bottom reds are wider so they don't go past, but I'm happy with the easier version at my level.

I'd say my main 3 go to routines are long straight blues from baulk, basic line up and T line up. You still see plenty professionals doing all 3 of these so they must work. When I started doing them regular I noticed a big improvement in my game.

As for the Les thread, lots of people including myself have offered good advice, be it technique, routines, mental attitude. I just think Les has his own ways and he reverts to them rather than giving change a chance especially when he hangs his cue up for summer to play golf.

The coaching section seems to be really quiet these days, similar to the rest of the forum. Same questions and threads appearing time and time again, players needing a quick fix rather than work it out on the table or use the search feature on here.

I always start cueing over the baulk line then with white up and Down the spots to get cueing straight.
I would then clear the colours off their spots, best of 10.

After that play the black if it's pot as many times as possible and try and beat my highest which is a modest 27. Sometimes I'll change and do pink and blue.

Then a regular line up. Sometimes I will switch the lineup around and play a T or cross routine .

Sensible stuff. The 'set up' and thus alignment is the crucial factor in starting off well. That reinforced body memory for the rest of the session. I will incorporate this before I pop the meter next time at the table.

Tried to do these routines yesterday. Clearing the Reds was fine but when I added the colours I kept breaking down. I was losing my cue ball control really easily. Not sure why.

I moved on to this routine and struggled again.

I played a few frames against a friend and was playing really bad. He asked me if I realised I was snatching at my shots, he said my cue action looked rushed.
I've noticed this myself a few times so will be seeing a coach when I return back to the UK in 4 weeks time.

                            Very frustrating.
