Never mind that he calls it side and some call it english, back to the topic, is Eddie Charlton correct ?,
Terminology is meaningless if the effects aren't seen and learned from anyway, even for those who don't know the physics of what's happening, who believe something else entirely can use the effects they witness for good purpose, and yes we've also had this debate before and bigshot always chips in with his fairies at the bottom of the garden videos from Dr. Dave but let's have a serious debate about sidespin and how it works according to the laws of the napped cloth of the snooker table.
I say Charlton is wrong about the aiming point for the check side shot on the black he shows in fig 2, if he plays a power stun with check side then yes, as the cue ball wouldn't have time to come back on the line for the correct contact point for the pot, but a centre ball power stun gets you to the same position he shows, no side or adjustment of aim needed, but top run through with check (left hand) side to get to that position would be very close to the same aiming point as in fig 1.
This is a mistake that many make, Charlton included, Reardon puts you right in his book Classic Snooker, wish I still had that book so I could upload the pages where he describes it, oh and Ray Readon is a six time WSC who used side, unlike Charlton who steered clear of it, up to you who you believe I suppose.

Do you see a pattern guys?
Anyway, call stuff whatever the hell you want to. If you are talking to people who use different terminology it's generally considered appropriate that you learn theirs, rather than demanding everyone else learns yours.
....and the casual abuse of international members having the courtesy to contribute to the forum constructively, in a language not their native one, is nothing but vile.
I knew nothing of the terminology described, but it's stupid and non-descriptive. They are just names, but worse than that ones that add to confusion by having other meanings. You'd be better off calling them Kaark and Slumbged, or something equally nonsensical. The accepted snooker terminology is certainly NOT euphemistic, but rather descriptive. It's amusing that someone with such a casual acquaintance with their own language and terms, should be lecturing others on theirs.
It is my experience in life that you often find people will accuse you of what they are actually guilty of themselves. for good reason....they think that in this set of circumstances, this would would be their motivation and response.
I shall be filling this persons posts under 'ignore'.

can I ask tetricky & golferson, are you talking about Mr Big Shot not being a native English speaker? he is American and I am sure English is his first language; also I think lives in the UK currently.
As we have seen from his sometimes very good posts, he has a superb knowledge and usage of the written English language.
My issue with him is not him being American (even though he seems to have a chip about the British) but him saying we should all use simple words for a term, when the current terms are better suited than the words he is offering instead; and the words he offers have no clear link to the action being described; i.e. he was not following his own issue, ?
And it was his vernacular for pulling a term out of a body area and being a euphemism, when the current terms are not; it was him who insulted all cue sport players
It was his statement not to force terms on others; but he started the posts about using the "correct" term, etc.
If my replies come across as insulting to Americans, I apologise; will Mr Big apologies to the British and ALL cue sport players?
Up the TSF! :snooker:
