I have just watched episode three of The Brain with David Engleman, showing as a series on BBC4, this was about the unconscious mind, very interesting for those of us who play cue sports.
The brain actually sets up neural pathways to accomplish tasks on an unconscious level, like walking, running, cycling, tying shoe laces etc, all done as children, the conscious mind has to cope with these until the neural pathways are in place, then the conscious mind has nothing whatsoever to do with them.
So if a natural object ball sighter takes up snooker, his neural pathways will include locking the eyes onto the object ball, conscious thought will distract from that, basically what you are saying pottr
Your eyes do not manoeuvre the cue, set up a machine to do a task and calibrate it yes, but humans are not machines, and even if the eyes do not manoeuvre the cue, they do control it as a part of the hand/eye mechanics required, you hit what you're looking at is all I'm saying.
What do you say to those who don't and are poor players as a result ?
I wouldn't worry about over thinking. If you can't spot the line of aim in the first place, then I wouldn't worry about learning the technique.
The aiming part, the sighting part, the 'where are my eyes looking' part is the easy part. It's to be taken for granted.
Hit cue ball along the line to pot the object ball. That's as basic as it gets. You should have that covered before you pick a cue up. My nan could get that from her arm chair. Even Hazel ****ing Irvine could fathom that much.
You all know my thoughts on this sighting debate.
I will not be drawn on it further. I don't give a **** if Professor Grifty Mcshifty is giving a 6 part documentary on Channel 5.
My opinions are my own and I encourage you all to think for yourselves and decide for yourselves what is the truth. Coz to be honest, I don't really care if you take my advice or not, in the end, I don't benefit a sausage from it.
And yes, having a really bad day at the office
Gonna go home soon and pot balls for fun... All down to my decent technique x
I say be aware of looking at the object ball, make it part of your technique, get those neural pathways in place through learning and repetition.Last edited by pottr; 9 February 2016, 06:55 PM.

Yep, it's all done automatically. I don't know where you come up with the term 'object ball sighter'? When I first started playing snooker, I could see the whole table and all the balls.
Meh, we're all mechanical if you think about it. I mean for sure, we are conscious beings, cogito ergo sum and all that. But all that inner working of the mind is just bloody good software. You hit where you're looking. Ok, cool. Great stuff. Look wherever the **** you want. If your technique is ****, you can't hit where your looking at anyway.
I'd say their technique is wank, not worth a shilling and they should practice themselves into a state where it's better. Or if they don't have the minerals (time, opportunity) to improve, then they should seek help from those who could address any technical flaws... If they can't do that, then they should just accept the level they're at and enjoy themselves.

Only 2 things can get you even in the same ball park. Solid technique and practice. Lots and lots of focused, constructive practice.
Seriously, there is little point in doing anything else except what Pottr said in the video I originally posted. I'll admit I've personally thanked him via PM as it finally switched a light on for me.#jeSuisMasterBlasterBarryWhite2v1977Luclex(andHisF ictiousTwin)BigSplash!

No, none of my swearing has been changed.
It's not a deletion or an edit.
It's the entire addition of a new line:
I say be aware of looking at the object ball, make it part of your technique, get those neural pathways in place through learning and repetition
It's not coz of swearing, I've been reprimanded before for that, I know of the admin procedure when you get reported.
This is disgusting.
