  • Cue question

I was always of the mind that a snooker cue is a snooker cue and, until I became a member of this forum I really didn't realise that they do in fact come in many shapes and sizes.

Like many of the world greatest football playmakers, I am only 5' 6" tall and, with this in mind, I am wondering if there is a generally considered 'ideal length' for a cue suitable for such stature.

I have what I would regard as a very acceptable quality cue and it is 58" long. It was purchased 'off the shelf' as it were, i.e. tis not bespoke.

Would this be regarded as 'too long' by you more experienced members. Any comments/advice will be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance of any such help, and thanks again for all the help this forum has to offer, my game has improved dramatically since I became a member. My best break is now 54 and, only yesterday I came from 23 and 28 behind in two frames to take them. This is all down to my improved potting and safety play gleaned from books and, more particularly, this forum.

I regard this as being 'not bad' for a grey haired old codger. I just wish i had taken up the game much earlier in life.

You will get different opinions on this. I can tell you what I was shown by a coach I go see .

In your ideal address position ( correct length bridge , forearm verticle etc ) there should be at least an inch or two behind your grip hand . But not too much either

thats good going for a cofin dodger bluenose, keep up the good work. dont think about age just the next shot..
cue wise as long as you feel youve tried enough cues to say you like the vibe of the cue your using at the moment. i mean most improving players ideally need a cue that that feel plays all the shots and they like the vibe of, not just because they have gotten use to it over time.
btw if you were thinking of taking your cue down to 57 be aware that this will change the feel of the cue. a shift in its balance and stiffness could change it for better or worse

It sounds like you are doing well with your present cue. I am 5' 7" and can play perfectly well with standard 57" cues, but my ideal length is 56.5 to 56.75". I know it doesn't sound like much of a difference, but that's the way it is. More important for me than those few eighths of an inch is the balance point, cue weight and tip size, in that order. Personally I wouldn't take your present cue any shorter, leave it as it is and see if you can try a decent 57" cue from a mate or someone else in the club and see how it feels.

Thanks for the replies chaps. I will see if I can borrow and use a shorter cue and see how I get on with it.

I just love j6uk's expression 'Coffin dodger' I hope that I can continue 'dodging' for many more years yet!

Being a blue nose, are you based in Stockport by any chance?

If you are happy with the cue leave it as it is. they are never the same after you chop them, sounds like you are getting on well with it anyway.

Bluenose: your cue is plenty long enough for you to adopt any kind of cue action. It's the taller players who have problems with length and need to adapt stances and bend arms etc to fit their long bodies and limbs inside standard cues, some can do it like j6, most can't and need something longer.

Hiya bolton-cueman, not too sure of the relevance of Stockport to being a Bluenose, can you enlighten me? I am a Bluenose from being a Birmingham City supporter since 1947.

Thanks for all of the replies. As I said before, I might just give a shorter cue a go but, it does seem as though I will be as well off by leaving things as they are.

Blue Noses are Man City fans around here... where most Man U fans are in Essex / London / Surrey most City fans seem to come from Stockport
