  • My development...

This thread may be of little interest to most. But I'm quite impressed with myself tonight so I though I had to share it with someone.

I very rarely play snooker maybe 2 hours every couple of months. However I play pool to a decent level.

I'm very tired of practising pool so I though I would invest in a Andy Travis snooker cue oo similar specs to my pool cue and only practise snooker from now on.

Previously my highest break was 47 when I was 15, 10 years ago. Since then not sure I have ever made a 30?

Anyway, tried the new cue out this evening and I'm not sure what came over me. I quickly made a break of a 60! It's not much, but I'm chuffed. Not only this, but I was aligning straight the white and blue (about 4ft apart) and easily drilling the blue in the corner with the white following in.

I think after a month of playing twice a week, there couple be some good development in me. So I wanted to make a thread just for keeping tabs on myself.

However my biggest trouble is potting the black off its spot!!! Just seem to catch the near knuckle quite often.

Also on a pool table I struggle when there is distance between balls. Just don't seem to have a good eye for distance. But on a snooker table I'm absolutely fine?

Sounds pretty awesome to me, but then again although I've always played a fair bit of pool over the years, I've never had a proper crack at snooker until now. If you can get a 60 break that's like my Holy Grail just now! lol

I've been practicing about 6 hours a week for the past month or so and watching online videos and past matches to give me ideas on the table. I also got a powerglide cue the other day that feels nice to play with. Today I actually got a 5 ball sequence and potted a few nice pinks which pleased me

You mention the black, I have to say I did struggle big time initially to just pot the damn thing at all, but I have noticed an improvement and I think it's down to how I'm beginning to find a way to line up the pot that feels ok to me. It's going to take a fair bit of time I think to start getting good at break building to any degree, but I'm definitely going to stick at it and see what happens.

You mention the distance. If you're potting from distance fine then happy days

I've found longer shots easier then potting the black up close to be honest, for me it just seems easier to line up from further away. Saying that, I still miss some and I was struggling to pot the blue from distance into the bottom right pocket, took me about seven tries! Then I seem to cue incorrectly sometimes, and part of that is I'm still getting used to all the different bridging you need to discover at different points about the table.

The Q Club in Glasgow does 5 hours for £20, I think I shall be availing of this soon. Good luck with your efforts, sounds like you're well on your way

      Nice job on the 60.

There are a number of reason why you may struggle between tables. This is one of those things where you would really need a coach to take a look at you. You could post a video of playing snooker and video of playing pool to see if anything is changing in the transition.

Some possible ideas could be, you are more comfortable with your snooker cue than pool cue, body positioning around the pool table vs. snooker table, perception of the smaller vs larger balls (though it's usually the smaller balls that gives trouble). I'm just guessing at this point though.

Big jump I remember I did this first time I played too although I too had played pool and billiards before snooker. I think my first 50 was a 68.

Well done - you hooked now -

Secondly you miss the black because you picking the line to the back of the pocket which makes you hit the near jaw - pick the line for the money side of the pocket - the open bit - not the back of the pocket.

That's great stuff, I remember when I first played snooker , I walked straight in, made a one, miscued a few times, went home.
This is how you play darts ,MVG two nines in the same match!
