Seen they mold three balls at a time with thick stems which are then cut and the balls ground and polished off

VMax, I have the SCs at home now, they needed a good wash, Aramith restore, then Aramith cleaner. They look lovely. I weighed them all together and they came out a smidge over 139g on average. How much should they weigh? A daft question in one way because they're no longer made and haven't been for a long time.

As for the weight I'm unsure, about 141 ish would be my guess, you occasionally had a light cue ball and changed it, but to be honest a couple of grammes is unnoticeable in an SC set. The blue in mine is 143.5 but you sure don't feel it when playing run through's. These PR pro 1 g's are yet another attempt to stop the kicks and bad contacts, but it's still happening and it will continue as long as PR balls are used. Trouble is that Aramith have cornered the market, their sales blurb is believed and an awful lot of younger players (those under 50) don't know when they get a bad contact, they've grown up with these balls and they think they cued the ball badly when it happens.

Can I ask, is it basically less air bubbles because it's runnier, that's what makes it more or less dense ?( not including adding anything into the PR mix)
We make plastic wheels that are very, very hard when cold, they have a metal additive called Bekishield @ 10% but they are pliable when first removed from the tool and too hot to handle without the operator wearing gloves.
Nothing we use though is as dense a material as the resins used for billiard balls, all our plastics come ready made as granules that simply need to be melted in the press and then injected in the mould tool, cooled for a certain period before being removed. The injection takes seconds, the cooling sometimes about three minutes, sometimes seconds, depends on the material and the product.

Vmax: many factors for kicks, balls, cueing, chalk, cloth, heaters. Ding uses (or did) a Hainsworth Precision Pro cloth = faster ball movement and no need for heaters = less static and less kicks. But with the Saluc group now owning Strachan, we've got no chance of the HPP ending up on a table with no heaters, like the 80s.

The rules of snooker used to state that the game must be played with SC balls, the rules now state a ball recognised by the governing body, I emailed World Snooker asking which balls are recognised and got no reply, why ? why do they insist on using PR balls when all they get are problems with them. Saluc have billiard sports by the short and curlies, now they even own a cloth manufacturer, it'll be a table maker next, then Tweetens.
The retro revolution can start now, let's buy up as many old sets of SC's as we can for our napped club cloths and we can enjoy virtually kick free snooker for ourselves. Eventually this may make it's way to the ears of Barry Hearn.Last edited by vmax4steve; 4 June 2016, 04:11 PM.
