  • Hitting from the elbow .

I can't find the thread I read 2 weeks ago but ut suggested hitting from the elbow, a term I have not heard of before.

I have given it a go the last 3 session as I have been a little erratic lately and won 8-1, 4-0 and 7-1 today, the 7-1 against a partner who has beaten me the last 3 weeks previously.

Although I haven't quite got it I've had 3x 60's, 3x 50's a couple of 40's and countless 30's so not quite there but scoring most times. and safety has improved dramatically in control to baulk cushion.

I would like to know a little more as at the moment I am imagining my elbow movement for control where previously my focus seemed to be on hand opening / closing and feeling it.

Concentrating on my elbow has made everything a stroke (I imagine the feel like a 10ft putt at golf) and even helped my pause.

The only thing creeping in at the moment when pausing is fighting that inner "give it crack" when not quite confident; still managing to deliver it smoothly on most longer shots but I can hear a couple of the monkeys arguing which is distracting my rhythm on the odd occasion.

As I haven't heard of this term before (hitting from the elbow), I thought I would ask if there's anything else to this thinking while I am trying to adopt it into my game.

By the way, whoever brought it up up, cheers, feels like it has some foundation to help me along a bit!

Think it was J6uk that mentioned it . He's definetly mentioned it before . Treating the arm like a pendulum swinging from the elbow

I too have been doing this more but like you said , I find hard not to hit the ball too hard

Aye J6 was the first person I heard use it, maybe a couple of years back, but there is a little video of Ronnie doing coaching with some little kids on YouTube where he shows them that you should hit from the elbow.
      https://youtu.be/pVjIZpY3Yug
It's under the cue action section .

Elbow stays still and the forearm swings like a pendulum I think

I'm not hitting it hard very often, just on some of the long stun shots that are reasonably straight; just need to get the cue right through and smooth. I'm not 100% confident in my cue at present but trying to let that go and get on with it as these things sometimes grow into an issue if you let them.

A little frustrating when you miss a nice straight blue as you've hit it too hard; what do I regularly practice for straight cueing, you guessed it, long straight blues but smoooooooooth.

Well I have J6 to thank then; I'm concentrating on hitting from the elbow but not dropping the elbow; just treating it as a pendulum and only concentrating on that slight acceleration with where I want the cueball to go.

Nope. Just pendulum from the elbow.

I remember reading it in an old snooker book about 25 years ago.

Can you remember which one as I have a few I've collected.

Never heard of it before. I understand the elbow is a pendulum but never heard hitting from it, always been from the hand for me and then the grip.

Gave all my books away when I stopped playing. Even after 20 years not playing I tried to remember the simple things that I'd learned as a kid. I'm still a bit like you though, timing comes and goes on the long shots but I've found the 51 routine has helped with that a bit more than long blues.

Yeah I've not really put much time into this routine as just been struggling a little for table time (been splicing broomsticks!).

Joined 2 local clubs this week so awaiting membership confirmation of one and looking to get a midweek practice there with routines.

The guy I beat this morning 7-1 (for the first time in 3 weeks) now informs me that as the league is starting he can only do it every other week!

A struggle to find good practice partners (and I'm not that good) but hopefully I'll find a couple in the new clubs.

I'll give the 51 a go as I normally practice clearing the colours which has certainly helps in matches.

Sounds like your doing well with your game. I know the feeling of splicing broomsticks, I got plenty firewood from when I gave it a whirl lol
