  • Wasteing Precious Hours

I was practicing the other night and after about an hour I realized that what i was doing was just hitting balls around and not learning anything useful I have a bare structure to my practice and I was wondering how other members approach their practice to utilize the hours they have and get the most out of them on the practice table ??

Solo is ok, but it can be a bit depressing if that' all there is. I'd say do 50% in frames with other people, so that solo then has a reason and improvement and drive are in your game. Winning frames will give you the incentive to improve in practice.

Practice the shots that you struggle with, or just difficult shots more than easy ones. Potting with the white on/near the cushion etc...

I play 3 times a week currently one of which is solo. In solo I like to first get warmed up by doing a line up to get cueing smoothly. I don't worry about missing and when I do I put the ball in the pocket and carry on I don't beat myself up about it. Then I do some corner to corner blues and and shots I struggled with confidence on in my last match. Solo is a great way to discover the route of the ball with stun screw and side. Try getting in and out of baulk on a wrong sided blue etc. Study the direction of the cue ball and learn and remember. When you miss a cut do you generally hit it thick? Play these over and over, the point where your brain thinks you need to hit the OB is wrong so when you adjust and pot the ball, remember the adjustment, try it when u next play someone. You will want to trust your old instinct of where to hit the OB but remember what you learnt and trust it.

Playing tonight and I'm having a pratice before hand ill give it a go what also frustrates me is when you know you put the hours in take last night I was playing against a guy I know I'm better then and he doesn't relly have time to pratice so there's a lot of 8 points scored run back to baulk and he bet me and for the love of me I couldn't figure out what I did wrong

Don't beat yourself up, people can worry too much about safety. It's surprising how often you DONT leave your opponent much on when you have a go at a long/difficult red. If you are better and he's scoring eights and snookering, play out the snooker with pace and split the Reds, once he sees you don't care the pressure is on him! Not caring too much turns the tables in my experience.

                      Hypothetical scenario:

When you get to the club, don't go to the table immediately...light up a cigarette outside instead.
Than have another. Patience my friend.
Then grab a beer. Drink, socialize.
                      Now you're mentally ready.

If the opponent isn't there, setup a lineup.
                      You get 1, 0, 0, 6, 8, 17, 1, 8...hmmm, doesn't work, take a break and go outside for a smoke.
Socialize. Tell everyone how you're just not feeling it today, you're head is gone. Check the tip of your cue. Must be something wrong with it.
Now have a phone call or two. Check football scores, maybe you have got those 10 pairs right at the bookies...Oh, no...again you miss just one or two pairs. Crap.
Hey look, here's your opponent. Tell him to warm up on table 2, you'll get there quickly, just need a cigarette.

                      Approximately 30mins later...
Your opponent opens up with a very good break off shot.
You fire in a very difficult red and obtain a perfect position on the black.
You miss the easy black !!! Something is not right.
Your opponent makes 42, and then instead of going for difficult red, plays a sissy safety. What kind of snooker is that?
                      Now you're fuming.

You have a go at a few more tough reds. You fully expect to pot each and every one. And why not? Kamui black tip should help with that.
Only one of them went in. You got a break of 6. Incredible how you can't get any run of the ball.
                      Frame lost.
                      The another frame.
Similar scenario although you do manage to pot of few more.
It is just not fair. You pot the most flair shots and still lose. Why does it have to be like that?
Time for a quick smoke break again.

You wonder why your opponent stays at the table when you go for those smoke breaks. Strange guy. Why isn't he like us??
                      Have a phone call.
                      Check the bookies.
20mins later you're back at the table...

I was just describing time wasters and crybabies from my own club. I thought that was obvious.
Other clubs might have different characters.
