If the guy has a better safety game than you but only gets 8 breaks then spread the reds a bit so it's more difficult to play safe and go for your shots, he's only gonna score 8!

Good post Shockerz, or just play who gets highest break as at least when it's fun you tend to learn more rather than become frustrated from negative snooker. At even a poor level winning seems to take over from learning and players don't progress very quickly then.

We've got a guy at the club who's safety is awesome and he's 73, he can put the ball on the cushion from anywhere, he's a nightmare to play and everyone avoids him now as he's too good at it and your rhythm and patience is shot by the time you get a half chance.

I've lost another practice partner so have decided to play him every other week to learn how to get the better of guys like that. May just smash the balls everywhere each time and see how he gets on with that; canny players the old boys who still have good eyes!

The old fella won;t play highest break although I do this with some of the team players when we're practicing prior to a match, cuts all the safety out and we get to re-rack em before the colours!

Fair play to him, I hope I'm still playing at 73. He's at an age where improving would be last thing on his mind but for players trying to get better it's pointless being negative as it's the wrong mental approach to being able to string a few balls together. If your running to the hills after every other shot your never going to feel comfy building breaks.

His name is all over the club boards from the past and he's in every day except Sundays which is the day I'm gonna play him on. It'll help me understand a little more what to do with these sort of players but don't want too much of it as I think it'll do more damage than good.

I've been trying harder and harder to keep a blank mind so they'll be a little practice there then!

Be a good test on keeping everything relaxed, so easy to tense up when you play negative guys as the boredom does set in pretty quick.

The guy gives you all the comments as well to wind you up like,

"I'll never beat you as you are a really good player so I'll just play for fun (as he stitches you up again)"

"I don't play too much nowadays and haven't been in for weeks" Yeah right!

"God I keep setting you up, what do you mean, that's an easy one!"

Never puts his fouls up and always manages to put a half up every now and again so he can gain an extra point or two; means you have to keep an eye on the score always.

                  Tough old bird!

Ask him this time if he's ever seen the red arrows display team, then smash the reds all over the place lol

Oh I like that, have to remember to do it.

I'll tell him it's my red arrows safety shot!

I play a lad every now and again who is very very good, he likes to play an open game , as he says, it's only practice, which suits me,the trouble is he's so good at playing attacking safety where he splits the pack the reds are beautiful but you are either stuck behind a baulk colour or welded to the top Cush. What I normally do ,is go for one ,then put the referee gloves on, sometimes when he's having a bad patch I get to have a game, but it's not often.
This is how you play darts ,MVG two nines in the same match!

For those players that have a bag of good attacking safety shots, watch and learn. I try and spot stock shots from players so I can remember them......

Every now and again you get surprised and think, "Why don't I do that!" I'm sure the pro's know lots of shots to nothing, just having a few extra in your armory can make all the difference.

I rolled the white up to a red on the cushion in the league individuals last year with reds everywhere and I knew the guy was thinking about what break he was going to get until he started cueing over the cushion, then he was thinking about what he would leave if he didn't get it! He missed and I knew he would as he hadn't been good off the cushion previously so why not give him a chance to miss another?

A player should be able to handle just about any type of player. Slow and negative ones as well as those brave players who mess up the table all the time with their crazy pot attempts. If one is truly better, then he should win most of the time. What control do we have over what our opponent does?
Players are free to choose their own safety/attack balance.

We've got an old boy in the Cov league who is still very good, I broke off against him this season and he knocked a long red in, made 30 then tucked me up behind the yellow.
Most nervous i've been on the snooker table in years and I was playing a guy in his 70's. Just about won 2-0 but he was more of a challenge than some of the youngsters i've played at SWSA who have no idea how to actually play the game but are decent potters.
                              "just tap it in":snooker:

i don't mind playing those who play safe when there is nothing on, however we have players in our club who can't make a 20 break and yet unless they are on a sitter , they play safety.
it really annoys me as most frames are taking half an hour plus. so i just end up going for everything just to have some sort of game rather than safety after safety ....boring game.
