  • Pushing through the shot

I've been struggling on and off for a while to push through the shot and keep quitting (hitting the brakes).

I was wondering what exercises (or other) there are that I can practice to get the cue tip right through the ball?

I know what I should be doing but am struggling in the practice and match frames to do.

If there is s practice exercise then that would be great, or mark the cue etc etc.

Simple and short, but some nice mental and visual images here from old Bazza. https://youtu.be/jfr0Ncp6Yhc

Why not try concentrating on something else? Keeping you head still or something, to let your subconscious mind play the shot.

Yeah tried that for quite a while but kept hitting the breaks!

Part of the reason I wondered if anyone had a any exercises.

When you say hitting the breaks, I keep thinking you're knocking in tons I know what you mean though, never had that problem thankfully, so I can't really help. I get through the ball really well, just not in the right direction

Ha ha, that made me laugh.

I also spelled brakes wrong! I've got snooker on the brain so put breaks.

I meant brakes as in quitting on the shot.

Have you changed your stance recently? Sometimes it’s something small like the pathway of the cue past a certain can get blocked. If you feel that the cue is actually free to pass all the way thru a shot but you are still hitting the brakes that is different.

To much technique tweaking without long periods of enjoyment of knocking the balls around.

Nice thinking Mr Crafty but I think I'm just hitting them brakes!

Tried that. Great for all up to around 8ft and really got my arm smooth, loved it. Everything over 8ft, hit the brakes.......infuriating. Had a few frames today, couldn't get over a 44 and same the other day, had a 51 but just cannot get those long pots to get in so puts too much pressure on the make a decent break so they have dried up!

I think I just need to find a practice routine where I have to push the cue through and then just keep doing it until it replaces my instinct to stop the cue.

Thanks for all the replies though!

Listen, if you are struggling with long pots then practice long pots. When you do it just focus on staying still but do not go into taking your technique apart. If you do you will end up with a stroke that has no flow to it and that is what you are describing. You just need to enjoy banging them about.

IF your problem is yips , than :

Few balls on the table, than try to keep position on the next ball by playing power shots and using the cushions as mach as you can. Play the power shots, as effortless as you can. This will force your arm to let the cue go.
swing your wrist during your cue action ( like Jimmy does ) and Change your grip and try to stop the cue at the end of your delivery with your back 3 fingers (thump lose). Your arm should stop by toching the chest, but your wrist will follow the cue and give the cue chanse to go through.
( just like Ronni's cue action ) . My brother does the same .

tbh, I gave this advice to a player awhile ago and it did help him completely to get rid of the yips.

However, I have to say, asking someone changing a part of his technique could also be the worst advice to that person . because this could ruin and destroy his game totaly . ( any coach in the world would disagree with me on this one ) .

SO, whether you give it a try or not ,, it's up to you Marc !!
I hope you get sorted out asap !! :snooker:

This is like asking for advice on how to lose weight. You can only sort it yourself, tbh..
