  • Cue ball spins left to right on screwback

    Hi.

I have noticed when I attempt to screw the ball back (sometime successfully sometimes not) that after the shot is played the cue ball always spins from left to right even if it is stationary. I am trying my best to hit the ball low and in the centre

Any ideas what is causing this and what I can practise to stop this happening.

    Cheers for any help
    Mike

You are hitting the ball with unintentional left hand side.

There are numerous exercises you can employ to practice centre ball striking.
Some others more knowledgeable than I will be along.

I think your cue action is probably at fault. If I understand your problem correctly, it sounds like you're cueing arm is out to the side a bit rather than vertical as it should be. The cue is then striking with a slight glancing effect as it passes at an angle.

If this is the cause it will apply to all your shots, especially played with force; you probably won't notice the others because the cue-ball is further away. If it remains uncorrected you will adjust your sighting to allow for this inaccuracy which will make the game a lot harder. Correcting this will probably involve changing your stance.

One of the top pros plays like this all the time; can't think who it is, Swail perhaps or Carter. I'm sure someone will put me right.

Hi, your arm doesn't have to be straight (you just have to look at Ray Reardon as an example). What you need to do though is cue straight - the best way to start doing this is to cue on the balk line. Place your cue on the line and cue along it.. any wavering will be seen by the shadow your cue will make when it's going back n forth (you can get a mate to check this for you)

          Many thanks for the replies..

Although I never thought of it before it makes perfect sence I am always putting unwanted side on the cueball I do my best to hit the white in the centre but regulary see the white travel off the line of aim. I have been playing snooker for over 30 years and love the game but with an high break of just 33 I guess I should start to somehow try to correct my stance and cueing action.

You dont know any snooker coaches in the west midlands do you?

          Cheers Mike

How do you know he'll need to change his stance when you've never seen him?
