You probably wouldnt play any worse but 1 1/2 halfs solid and varied practice is more advisable than 6 hours just potting balls for fun if thats what your doing. However, if you can handle 6 hours and vary your practice with varying routines go for it.
I dont think I can stand knocking balls around for 6 hours to tell you the truth. I have a routine that I stick to but it varies a bit from day to day. It basically are drills that helps me to practice my cueing, my potting, and my positioning.

Going back to the discussion, I believe that you need to practice in order to improve, just like with anything else.

For myself, I always feel like I am a better player today than I am yestersday even if I play really bad today. It is because I have learned something more about the game. If I have spent 6 hours practicing, I would feel too tired to go into a serious match. So, you are right, to prepare for a tournament, i feel that 1 to 2 hours are enough to get myself warm up, but that is not the kind of practice to help me improving on areas that needs improving.

There are so much to learn, I feel, that no enough practice is enough.
