  • Cue ball control

Hi, i'm 15 years old, over the last few months my game has improved incredibly, however, one thing which always lets me down is my cueball control, i can position the cue about 50% of the time to where i want it, but never enough to be picking regular 40-50 breaks up, i just wondered if anyone had any tips? would be much appreciated as my potting is pretty good so once i have position in my bag too i should be a pretty good all rounder, oh and im very serious and passionate about snooker

I have been using the JP Nolan Snooker Coaching guide (google it and you can download it).

It really helps with potting, learning cue ball control and strategy/safety.

        : )

Keep at it and you will improve. Good luck!!
My favourite players: Walter Lindrum (AUS), Neil Robertson (AUS), Eddie Charlton (AUS), Robby Foldvari (AUS), Vinnie Calabrese (AUS), Jimmy White, Stephen Hendry, Alex Higgins, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Dominic Dale and Barry Hawkins.
        I dream of a 147 (but would be happy with a 100)

Hi Josh, it is always a good idea to spend some time practicing routines that focus on positioning rather than just potting and at your age and standard, you may benefit from some coaching. It might be worth checking to see if there are any qualified coaches in your area. I would recommend you look for a coach with a World snooker or IBSF qualification, or at least some qualification that you can check out before you go to see them. Good luck!!

Coaching would be very beneficial. I had coaching for a little while and it brought my game on dramatically, I learnt shots which I would have never learnt through practice alone. If you do get coaching try to practice as much as you can to let what you've learnt sink in properly. Cue ball control will most likely come from more and more practice.

Always try and play to give yourself an option of more than one pot so you have a back up if you don't quite get is right. Don't box yourself in by taking all the loose reds and leave yourself relying on a good split off the pack or a tricky positional shot. IE: if you have a red near the corner play low on the black and get the reds open early. Good luck

Thanks for your reply. Could anyone tell me of any cheap snooker books/videos avaliable to buy online that would be beneficial to the break building/cue ball control side of my game, much appriciated, Josh.

you probably do already, but watch lots of snooker on youtube to learn break building and try to predict the shots that the pros are gonna play

                          no problem!
i sometimes watch whole matches on there, its good place to catch up on whatever tournaments have recently been played. Some are better quality than others and u get foreign commentators on some but that doesn bother me too much. Most recent match i watched was Ronnie O Sullivans loss at uk ptc 3. so yeah!
