  • Bristol boys dominate RJT South second leg

BRISTOL teenager Jamie Hawkins was put through an emotional wringer en route to claiming his first snooker tournament win on the EASB (English Association of Billiards & Snooker) Regional Junior Tour South.

Jamie prevailed in a “tense” quarter-final match against his older brother before accounting for Thomas Lancastle 2-0 in the final of the second leg on the professional tables at the South West Snooker Academy, Gloucester.

The 15-year-old, who pocketed £100 prize money, said: “At first it was looking like I wasn’t even going to reach the quarters but fortunately I qualified second in my group on frame difference.”

However, Jamie was then “disappointedly” drawn against big brother Danny, 19, in the last-eight. The pair had already met in the group stages and Danny had won 2-1.

Family and friends were “watching intensively” as Jamie edged the deciding frame.

Now in his third season on the junior circuit, the youngster, who practises at Keynsham Snooker Centre, lost in the quarter-finals of the first leg at Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club last October.

He finished 19th in the rankings last season. Danny was fourth.

“Now I have managed to win one of these events, my aim is to qualify for the Premier Junior Tour where the standard is much higher,” Jamie declared.

Fellow Bristolian Lancastle, who pocketed £50 for finishing runner-up, also collected the £20 high-break prize for a run of 70 against Joe Taylor (London) in the quarter-finals.

Rankings leaders Mark Lloyd (Gosport) and Daniel Knox (Ascot), the first leg winner and runner-up, failed to escape the group stages.

The third leg is at Cambridge Snooker Centre on Sunday, February 2.
