  • Liverpool ruin pefect day for 11-year-old lad

IF AFC Bournemouth had turned over Liverpool in the FA Cup last Saturday, it would have capped a “perfect day” for an 11-year-old snooker player from the south coast.

Bradley Cowdroy - along with Jamie Wilson, Mickey Joyce and Adam Stacey - booked his place in the last-16 of the English Under-14 Championship via the southern qualifier at Jesters Snooker Hall, Swindon.

Cowdroy, who is based at Greenbaize Snooker Club, Bournemouth, and also competes on the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Silver Tour, said: “It feels particularly special because this was my first attempt at qualifying for a national championship.

“I am really looking forward to Leeds (on April 12) because I know that whatever happens, it will be an amazing experience. I hope I can put my best game on show there.”

And he added: “If only AFC Bournemouth had beaten Liverpool in the FA Cup to make a perfect day!”

    Alas, the visitors prevailed 2-0.

Meanwhile, East Londoner Stacey topped his group with four wins out of four and hopes to put last season’s disappointment behind him.

The 13-year-old from Poplar was knocked out 4-3 on the final black in the last-four in 2013.

Stacey, who started playing in EASB events at the age of nine, practises five days a week at the Mile End American Pool & Snooker Centre in Stepney Green and is coached by Gary Filtness.

He made his England debut last year in the Home Internationals in Leeds.

Dad Steve said: “The family was so proud for him playing for England at only 12-years-old.”

Jamie Wilson and Mickey Joyce’s qualification means Chandler’s Ford Snooker Club players have made the last-16 draw for seven successive seasons.

Ten-year-old Wilson, who also qualified last season, compiled a personal best 43 break in a crucial 3-0 victory over Aidan Murphy (Hanham, near Bristol).

However, the Portsmouth potter needed one frame from his final match to secure runners-up spot behind Stacey.

And at 2-0 down to Joe Jenner-Bailey (Saffron Walden), one can only imagine what his parents were going through.

But Wilson dug out the third frame to leave himself with an identical record as Murphy - and progressed thanks to the result between the pair.

His relieved but delighted mum Suzy said: “His temperament throughout the day was fantastic, especially going 2-0 down and then winning the final frame.”

Falcon Pools-sponsored Joyce made a successful debut in a national championship.

The ten-year-old from Basingstoke recently recorded his first half-century (54) in tournament play and leads the Cuestars South of England Under-21 Silver Tour.
