  • Hamim again on glory trail

HE ENJOYED his moment in the spotlight and now wants more of the same.

West Midlands teenager Hamim Hussain has successfully taken the first step to defending his English Under-14 Championship title.

The 13-year-old, from Small Heath, Birmingham, played with confidence in winning his three matches at the Midlands qualifier at Hot Shots Snooker Club, Oldbury, to book a place in the last-16 of this season’s national competition.

Following his victory earlier this year, Hussain appeared on BBC Midlands Today, was featured in newspapers and attended an awards ceremony with the Lord Mayor of Birmingham.

“Playing in the national finals was a fantastic experience,” he said. “One I’ll remember for years.

“The venue was fabulous. There was even a crowd watching my game, including some established professionals.”

Proud dad Hosoun Miah said: He’s happy to go through and looking forward to playing in Leeds and defending his title.”

Taylor Fish, who competes on the EASB Regional Junior Tour Midlands alongside Hussain, was the other qualifier. The 13-year-old is based at and sponsored by Pockets Snooker Club, Kidderminster.

John Betton, Kidderminster Snooker InterLeague Secretary, said Fish was “playing some nice snooker” in his 2-0 victory over Jenson Kendrick (Stoke) and “stepped up his game” in a third-frame decider in his next match, restricting Halim Hussain (Birmingham) to one point.

Fish then lost 3-0 to Halim’s brother Hamim.

The last-16 play down to two finalists at the Northern Snooker Centre, Leeds, on Saturday, February 28.
