MOTORWAY traffic nearly cost a Norwich cueman his first ever spot in the last-16 of the English Under-21 Snooker Championship.
Sam Betts was docked one frame for arriving two minutes late for the southern qualifier at Frames Sports Bar, Coulsdon, London.
“I was very annoyed but I didn’t let it get to me,” said the 18-year-old, who then accounted for Haydon Pinhey (Plymouth) 4-3.
Betts secured a trip to Leeds next year by seeing off Jordan Winbourne (Southampton) 4-2.
Winbourne clawed back a 2-0 deficit to square the match but Betts “came out buzzing” after a toilet break.
Sean O’Sullivan, an ex-professional from London, and Sonnie O’Sullivan (no relation), from Aylesbury, the 2013 Cuestars South of England Under-21 Gold Tour champion, also qualified.
Sean O’Sullivan went out in the quarter-finals in 2011 and the last-16 in 2012 before a two-year stint as a professional on the Main Tour while Sonnie O’Sullivan has never reached this stage before.
The last-16 play down to two finalists at the Northern Snooker Centre, Leeds, on Saturday, March 7.
