HE HAS set a new junior snooker record in this country.
West Midlands teenager Hamim Hussain said he was “thrilled” to be the first youngster to have won back-to-back English Under-14 Championships.
The remarkably talented 14-year-old from Small Heath followed up his 2014 success in Leeds with a 5-2 victory over Taylor Fish in this season’s final at Longton Snooker Club, Stoke.
Hussain took the first two frames, Fish, from Kidderminster, levelled going into the mid-session interval but the defending champion won the next three.
“I still can’t believe it,” declared Hussain. “I’m thrilled to have set a record.
“Thanks to all who supported me and I hope I can continue my success. Also, thanks to the club hosts and officials.”
Six days later and taking a break from his revision, Hussain continued his winning ways with a first tournament win on the EASB Regional Junior Tour Midlands, one of the feeder circuits for the national under-21 tour.
He defeated Adam Goff (Towcester) in the final of the fifth leg at The Winchester, Leicester.
Goff potted only one ball in the first frame and rallied from trailing by more than 40 points to lead in the next before Hussain overcame the challenge to secure the match 2-0.
“It was a pleasure to play at The Winchester,” said Hussain. “I was very happy to win and I played good matchplay throughout.”
He pocketed £60 plus the £15 high-break prize for a run of 76 in his group-stage match against Thomas Kemp (Leicester).
